Spoke Too Soon - Tailgate/Light Misalignment

Well, I guess I jinxed myself. In a reply to another thread yesterday I commented that I've had my G05 for a couple months and had no issues thus far. Then comes yesterday afternoon where my tailgate wouldn't completely close. It turns out the right tail light seems to have slightly shifted to the left and is now being impacted by the tailgate. The gap and placement around the entire right tail light is slightly off all the way around as compared to the left. I was able to push it enough to get tailgate closed, but it rubs as it closes. You can see in the pics below the difference in the gap from correct right light (1st pic) to the askew left light that is rubbing (2nd pic). The light is not loose at all, and can't get it back into proper placement. Don't want to mess with it, so off to the dealer it goes. Will try to have my software updated for cornering lights, etc. while there. Anyone else seen this issue with the tail lights?

Yikes. That's a little concerning. I wonder if maybe it was damaged in transit?

I've had it for two months and no issues until yesterday. Never noticed any gap issues between lights and tailgate before and never had it make contact on closing til now. Weird.

Interesting. Do you think maybe someone could have bumped your bumper or something in a parking lot? Maybe they did but it didn't leave a mark?

No, I checked everything over VERY closely and there isn't the slightest sign of anything being bumped. Also looked at a couple pics from when I first took delivery 2 mos ago and you can see the right tail light is closer to the tailgate than the the left. Just wasn't as close as it is now. Was also the first hot (85ish), sunny day we've had here since I took delivery, so I'm wondering if something expanded and caused the issue.

From studying your pix, it appears the right hand part of the right tail light moved to the left. If correct and if it were my car, I try to avoid going in for service if I can...therefore I would get into the cargo area, remove the covering, loosen the screws that hold the tail light in place and move it to the right before any damage is done to either the tail light or paint on the tail gate. Looks from your pic that it should be more in the vicinity of the white line I drew from comparing it to the left one. Normally, there is enough slop in the holes used for mounting to allow a movement, looks like maybe a quarter to three eights of an inch is required. And who knows, maybe those screws are already a bit loose and allowed it to move in the first place but whatever, I'd be on it like a fly on dung

So it took nearly two weeks to get an available service appointment, but my car finally went in today for this issue. I decided to leave it to the dealer rather than opening it up myself in case there was a broken or defective part in the light assembly. . . didn't want them to put on me and say I caused it. Dealer could see obvious problem but didn't find any problems when they opened it up and just went ahead and realigned it. Looks good and functions properly now. Chalk it up to bad assembly and poor quality control at the factory. You'd think with my car being stuck in "Quality Check" for well over two weeks they might have noticed and addressed it at the plant, but I guess that's asking too much.

Bottom line, all is good now.

Just incredible how this visually obvious defect made it out of the factory. Glad it turned out ok for you but having to wait two weeks for an appt I hope you never have anything really serious that needs service

you must be living in a perfect world?!? let me know when you find a brand that dont have any problems with their fleet of new builts.

blame poor quality control is fair, but expecting a $75K car without any issues ludicrous.

My friend has the 12 Cyl Merc S Class, its a $100K+ car. It has software issues that he said Mercedes cannot fix, ever, and every time I have visited him, it has had mechanical issues as well. We took my X3 to a hardware store a couple years ago, when we pulled back into his driveway, he opened the garage door and my wife said to him...Gene, what's that shiny looking stuff under your car? It decided to leak fluid while we were gone. One other time, we were riding in it and kept hearing a thump which turned out to be a defective air shock, then he had radiator issues and on and on. All cars have issues, some you see, some you don't.
Another friend has a Bentley, I don't think I have enough room left in this post to explain the issues he had. Sad.

same as me, I try to post the topic yesterday. I just recognize couple days ago, when i wash the car. I thought the car was hitted or damage when they get the delivery. When I get the car there are a lot of white powder in the rear and I am going to dealer tomorrow. Please see the pics.

Some scratching on the sides where the two lights made contact and rubbed together. Can't see with tailgate closed and wouldn't really notice when opened unless you're looking for it. If the car weren't leased I'd probably care more about it and push for replacement, but frankly I feel it's a non-issue and just wanted the spacing/alignment fixed.

Just bought a 2019 lightly used (corporate car) X5. I noticed yesterday there was a gap similar to yours on the left tail light creating a larger gap on the left compared to the right.

Was this covered under warranty? easy fix? Also noticed the gas cover panel is not aligned properly either.

What the hell kind of QA do they have in Spartanburg?

Quick warranty adjustment at your dealer.
