Inner Hood Edge Scratch From Windshield Wiper
Does anyone else have their inner hood edge (facing windshield) scratched / scraped from pulling up the driver’s side windshield wiper? I noticed mine had a centimeter-long scrape today after six months and touched it up, and then I finally figured out that it came from the metal wiper base. I unfortunately didn’t take a photo of the “before“ (with scratch) but posted a couple “after” touch-up photos to show where the contact point occurs. Seems like a design flaw because the car wash crew always pulls up the wipers to clean the windshield. Sorry if this issue has been posted before but I could not find any related topics after searching.

You must be new to BMW. So sorry this happened to you! This design has been carried over from vehicle to vehicle, generation to generation. Is there a visible paint chip, or has the clear coat only been marred?

As noted in the owner's manual, they need to be put into the service position in order to pick them up. I print out a copy of the instructions and give them to anyone that may be picking up the wipers. (tinting, windshield replacement) Believe it or not my got scratched from the dealer changing my wipers.
Edit: I see Zanghyi17 beat me to it. |

Ahh so it’s a BMW quirk then. I still think it’s a poor design though because it’s not clear at all that you have to put the wipers in “standby” mode. I’m a pretty savvy car person and I’ve never heard of this before. I only ever take my X5 to a nice hand-wash car wash in LA where lots of luxury vehicles go, and the detailers clearly just yanked my wiper up and scraped the hood after so many washes. It was a deep scrape nearly down to the metal (not just clear coat). I regret not taking a photo before I touched up the paint today. Guess I’ll have to take a photo the next time because it’s definitely going to happen again!

I also have the chip. Did it my self during wintersport putting them up at night because it was snowing.
Still have to touch it up. It is right in my field of view when I am driving. I will take a picture to show (also AG paint so you can use mine) |

Just from a list of cars I've owned or driven that had submerged or hidden wipers that required this: BMW X5 (F15), BMW 3 Series, BMW 5 Series, Lexus RX 300, Lexus RX 350, Lexus GX 470, Lexus GX 460, Audi Q7, Audi R8. I'm sure there are others....

I assume the change in positioning of the wipers relative to the hood on the G05 is for style purposes. IMHO it's not worth it. I'd much rather have them in the more convenient position as they were on the F15. |

I always use the service position when cleaning the car but once the wipers suddenly moved while I was cleaning the windshield. It probably triggered the rain sensor at the top and the driver side wiper body ended up hitting the top edge of the hood (see picture of the tiny dent on the PPF). Not sure why it moved. It could be that I did it wrong during that time.

The F15 right passenger wiper is shaped differently, while you can lift slightly and clean, required the fold-out position to lift without scraping the hood. F15 wipers F15 wipers view from under hood (Note vehicle is an international market M50d - driver side on right) F15 Manual

Yes. A BMW "legacy" feature...
On my F82 M4 I have the same problem. What I've done is taken some 3M paint protection film, that is usually cut for the door edges of the car, and lined it around the area where the wiper blade will make contact with the hood. I installed the 3M paint protection film on the hood about 5 years ago, and even with the occasional, "Oh *$#^, that's right, I just bumped the wiper blade arm on the hood again...", the 3M paint protection film has prevented any scratches. Speaking of BMW "legacy" features: On the M4, if you raise the front seat as high as it will go, then fold the seat forward (to allow passengers to enter the rear seating area) and then move via electric switch the seat all the way forward, the top of the seat will collide with the window visor and CRACK the vanity mirror! BMW was having to replace these vanity mirrors and finally just had to inform the customer that BMW would replace the first breakage, but after that, it was the customer's problem. I know, I know, "1st World Problems", right? I hope the 3M PPF solution works for you. Cheers, -Tony

On my G05 I can lift the wiper blades sufficiently to clean the windshield without contacting the hood. It's not much, perhaps an inch away from the windshield, but enough. |

In regards to the OP, not many car wash crews will take conscious care when quickly lifting up wipers to dry windshields - leading to minor scrapes.
