No Auto Start/Stop Button?

I picked up a 2021 xdrive40i on Wednesday, and it appears to not have an auto stop/start button. The function also seems to be missing as the car does not turn off at red lights. What am I missing (or actually not missing)? I have attached a picture of where I think it should be.

Weird...it should be that blank spot between the start engine / parking sensor button.

A quick look at photos of 3 2021’s at my local dealer shows that none have the auto start stop button. Interesting.

Have you tried pushing where the button should be to see if anything happens?

Are there any graphic indications in your instrument cluster (usually lower right) that say anything about the status of auto start/stop?

If they removed the ability to turn off this function that would be a huge bummer!

Maybe they made it a menu item now.

what does the owners manual say about that function?

I would imagine it would still be able be coded off.

I would think that since they are now using a 48V hybrid system that the stop/start system has changed in how it works. Actually it may have been eliminated.

Edit: According to this article the 48v system doesn't eliminate the start/stop. It enhances it and allows it to stop sooner.

" In addition to that, the 48 V generator allows the car to shut down the engine more silently and to start it more quickly than before, improving even more the start-stop functionality.
When the vehicle is softly decelerating, the combustion engine can be switched off so that it can be replaced by the electric generator itself."

The owners manual says it is there. If I push the blank spot nothing happens. I don't think it needs to be coded off because it appears to always be off. I have seen nothing on the instrument cluster.

One BMW Genius thought it must be a mis-build and another said he heard of others having the same thing. They are trying to find out is it is a problem or a feature. I am happy to not have it.

The auto/stop is the most hated feature on my list. I do not use it at all and i turn it off manually everytime I start the vehicle. If it is really gone for MY2021, i guess it is not a bad thing.

Wonder if this goes for the M50i as well? I doubt it as it does not the 48V system.

Get a OBD2 adapter & Bimmercode & code it off permanently .

It is not possible to code off the Start/Stop feature although it can be coded to use the last setting on startup.

Looks like it is not eliminated, but the ability to control it by the driver has been eliminated.

Worst possible outcome.

Why would you say that? rdwboulder2 has reported that his X5 does not shut off automatically and the dealer told him the start/stop system has been eliminated.

And if you can’t set it anymore, then I wonder what coding it will do?

Because of what you posted about the 48v system.

Yes but that seems to not apply to the X5 since it does not have the start-stop system.

That would be good. But it’s been hot as hell here in the Denver area, and the ASS in my M50i has not kicked in because of conditions which auto disable the function.

Will be interesting to see if it’s truly gone. I thought the engines were emission certified with it enabled.

I have been looking at the owner's manual for the MY21s and they do reference the auto start-atop feature as well as the hybrid system and coasting like the article talked about.

When the ASS doesn't kick in due to climate needs there is a message displayed in the IC. I would assume rdwboulder2 would have seen that. I'm also assuming that he is not driving in Sport mode which would eliminate the ASS. It is odd that everything points to the ASS still being there but the engine does not seem t be shutting down. Then again, the owners manual says the start/stop button is there also but that is clearly not correct.

Hopefully we will hear from some others who have the MY21 40i to see what their experience has been.

FWIW I don't select any driving mode, but I always drive in "S" or "M" never in " D". The manual does discuss the Mild-Hybrid having a coasting mode but it only engages with transmission in "D". Something could have shown on the instrument cluster that I just didn't notice.
