Does it still annoy you or are you able to get used to it? I hear that Mild-Hybrid systems are way easier to deal with.

I am also curious about the annoyance factor as well (leaving increase wear-and-tear issue out for now).

I am curious because I just figured out why ASS annoys me so much in my non-MHT X5: it's my specific driving style and technique. Decades ago, I was trained, learned, and have practiced my entire life to slightly let off the brake just before final "lock" stop to reduce the discomfort (for me and passengers) of the stop "lock" impact (dampening the typical forth-and-back oscillation). It seems that style fools the non-MHT ASS system to pretty much always turn off the engine and then immediately turn it back on, creating anything but a smooth operation. And I am not changing my style, it is done for a good reason.

What I don't understand is why the 2021 G01 still has the auto start/stop button and 2021 G05 doesn't? My wife took delivery of her G01 like a week ago. The whole regulation bs makes no sense to me.

Regulations doesn't have anything to do with it. It seems to have been removed due to having the mild hybrid system as with other models that have it. Does the G01 have the mild hybrid for 2021?

This Genius explains everything you need to know about the MH and ASS. I believe it also mentions that it’s only available on the 6 Cyl engines.

I've mentioned in other threads, ASS is dangerous when parking in tight quarters. I have an antique vehicle that I park in my garage, in front of my X5. I have a tennis ball on a string that taps my windshield when I am far enough in my garage to not hit the antique - but I can close the garage door. It's tight - with inches to spare on either side.

With ASS on, the X5's engine cuts out as I inch the care forward toward the tennis ball and then the X5 lurches forward as the engine restarts. Super dangerous and unpredictable. I've had ASS turn on because I accidentally pressed the ASS button, gone into my garage with the stereo on (can't hear the engine) and missed hitting the car in front on me by millimeters after the X5 stopped, restarted and jumped forward. If I couldn't shut it off, it would be a deal breaker.

So clear customer preference is denied in favor for corporate CAFE numbers...

2020 has been peachy so far.

I do this as well. Really hoping this doesn’t fool the 48V system otherwise what a weird decision by bmw. By contrast, even the new 48V GLS and GLE still have an ASS off button.

Today I am very disappointed to find out that Bimmercode does not help permenantly disabling ASS for my 2021 X5. Does any one know of *any* possible way here (including defaulting to sport mode since I don't find it in bimmercode either)? Is there a different app/device that can help disable ASS functionality? Thank you so much.

Bimmercode will definitely default your drive mode to Sport (disregarding the error some have using an iPhone which has or will be corrected since it works in Beta). It possibly may keep the ASS turned off by remembering the last state although that has not been tested and some have said not possible due to how the Sport mode overrides.

Before changing your drive mode, please test to see if the "Last State" setting will work. Try and use Bimmercode to set the ASS to remember the last state. Then go for a drive in Sport mode so the ASS is off. Shut down the vehicle and restart, it will be in comfort mode but see of the ASS is still off when you drive and stop.

I just picked up my 2021 the other day an it's the same. The engine still shut off in either comfort mode or Eco mode. I don't remember which I was in. In sport mode the auto start/stop is disabled.

Question so I bought a 2020 40i for my wife and I am thinking about replacing my car next with a Z40i. The 2021 models still have the ASS off button, but does any one know if they will be adding it to this model? Also just noticed the brand new 4 series still has the ASS button? Is this a 6 cylinder SUV only thing?

Is this the feature you guys are referring to? Default driving mode?

I am sure it is, but note that if you want Sport Plus/Pro mode as default, you have to do it from Expert mode if using Bimmercode (search for posts that describe that, for example by me).

Can anyone describe this on their 2021? Just wondering if it feels much different than the previous model years because of the mild hybrid drive or is it still very obvious that the engine is cutting on/off? (and potentially jerky as described above from previous years)

I have a 2021 X40i and I honestly don't really notice it any more. It's not perceptibly jerky to me and I think it's really improved the fuel economy for me.

When I got the car and realized the on/off button was gone I was initially pretty upset but I don't even give it a second thought now. And if I did, I'd just pick Sport mode for the times I really don't want that function to engage.
