I would definitely get Rear steer - from driving it the car feels more nimble and has a noticeably tighter turning circle. BTW - choosing between a GTS and M50i - there are no bad options... |

I ended up going X5M Competition - which unfortunately doesn't have 2-axle air. I think I would have gone air if I'd chosen M50i as I love the way you can lower it. Yes it's not as good as DHP in the corners but for the M50i I think it makes some sense - giving it a more "iron fist in a velvet glove" dynamic. Having said that I drove a standard M50i (non DHP / non-air) and an X5 45e on 2-axle air when I was test driving.

My folks have both a new Macan S and a G05 X5. They got the Macan because of their regret with how aloof and numb the X5 feels to drive. The Porsche picks up where the E90 left off, whereas the G05 is just a nice commuter car/mall cruiser but not remotely fun to drive until it stiffens up around 50+ mph. The handling, steering, nimbleness, and overall "feel" of the Porsche is just so satisfying. The ride/handling balance is excellent, as the vehicle feels taught and hunkered down without being stiff enough to beat you up. Whereas the X5 feels like a nausea-inducing boat.
With all that being said, the X5 is far more luxurious with better tech/ergonomics, more spacious, etc. The Macan's interior reminds me of a compact sport sedan in how "fitted" it feels like a well tailored suit, but it's not as nice in design/ergonomics/tech. The issue with comparing X5 and Cayenne is that the Cayenne has become ridiculously expensive. I believe the S starts are like $85k, and with just a couple packages and nicer wheels it'll easily hit $100k. That's too much money in my opinion.

If OP is purchasing, Macan GTS holds its value like a champion vs. any BMW including M cars.
No brainer if its a purchase, leasing-wise, BMW has a huge advantage. |

Go for the GTS. Like you said, you already have a Highlander for hauling, so no need really to go for a bigger SUV. Like others have said, Macan is a hot hatch on stilts, and drives excellently, even for an SUV. Its pricey, but it does hold its value well, and at the end of the day its your wallet OP, whatever you feel comfortable paying.
My one other recommendation to try out would be the GLC 63 AMG. It seems like one of the things you really enjoyed from the M50i was the V8. The GLC in a sense bridges the Macan and X5. Not as big as the X5, and closer to the Macan in size, but much roomier interior. It won't handle as well as the Macan (no SUV other than Alfa can top it in my opinion), but its still really fun, and the AMG Biturbo V8 is excellent. I find the interior also a nice bridge, its not going to be as luxurious as the X5 or Macan, however I find it much nicer than the X3, and it does have plenty of nice materials such as a leather dash (optional) and door panels, and more soft touch materials in areas where the X3 is hard-touch plastic (center console, lower door panels), and it rides better than the stiff X3M, albeit not as soft as a Macan (with Air Suspension) or X5. The wife ended up picking up a GLC (albeit a 300, not AMG) over the X3 primarily because of the interior. Good luck OP |

So just to close the loop on this...
I ended up shopping my Macan GTS build around the local Porsche dealers to compare discounts. One of them went ahead and ordered it without my knowledge, then reached out and said “Hey, that exact Macan you wanted? It’s here, come drive it.” Which was awesome, but then while I was there test driving the Macan I saw something that really caught my eye and wouldn’t let go. So I ended up getting rid of the M550 and my M240 and taking home a 2020 911 Carrera 4S. I am absolutely in love. I drive it at least an hour or two a day, no real destination. I know “purists” like to shit on the AWD, but I love the feeling of all four wheels grasping for traction on launch or corner exit. It has all the track options - Sport Chrono, rear axel steering, PDCC, etc so I’ll have to track it next Spring. I hope to return to the BMW family in the future. Thank you BimmerPost community for all your help over the years! |

Agreed. The lack of low end torque made it feel significantly slower than my dad’s new X3 M40i. For $30K more, I just couldn’t accept that, regardless of how much better the ride and handling was.

I don't know any guy who has interest in these petite class SUVs and sports cars. Macans and Boxsters are abundant in the area where we live and almost always driven by women. I know what I see everyday here. It could be wildly different where you live but I really doubt it.

I never understood the point of soft close doors unless you have some disease that prevents you from using 1% of your available strength to give the door enough momentum to fully close.
My GF has softs on her 2016 X6 and never notice them since I don't pussy foot the doors? Just a solution to a problem that doesn't exist and creates a point of failure. |

Many points... you do not have to slam the door, you are almost certain to close the door every time, if you have children or elderly exiting/entering you do not have to do the awkward "your door is open" thing, I've had this option on every car I have owned which offered it going back to the Acura Legend. Lastly my cabinets, drawers and stove have soft close doors so why not my car?

I think this is the key. It's all about spec.

I looked at the Macan closely before I bought a Cayenne. The Macan is just too small as is the X3. Cayenne or X5 is a much better fit for most guys my size and bigger(6' 3"). I don't mind crunching and contorting to get in a 911 or Corvette but in an SUV, forget about it.

Since ive never driven any of those cars, i cant say how the driving or interior is between the gts, m50i or x5 m. I do know the macan s drove like a car and it was very nimble and agile but it lacked power. I also know my x5 has a fantastic engine but it drives like a boat and it has no feedback whatsoever. Between the two cars you listed, i would pick the macan gts but i like smaller cars and my decision is based on the macan s and the base x5. I want to point out, i couldnt get over for 85k you get sub 400 hp and torque. 375 to be exact. |
