If the current gen of interior design across models is a valid reference point, then probably this will be the interior design for all next gen cars. Pretty much the exact same interior of the iX can be found in the i4, so I don't see why other non-M models would have a different one. From a supply chain, cost, and technology/development perspective, standardisation makes a lot of sense.
Having said that, if this is the direction BMW is following, it'll be very hard for me to choose BMW over Audi/Merc again. I personally like the interior of the eTron GT (screens + Phy controls) quite a lot more than what we're seeing coming from BMW.

The entire car industry copies each other because every manufacturer follows trends. Why people are even surprised is surprising. Once BMW completely ditched analogue gauges, this was bound to happen. At least they're keeping the same layout where it's a screen for gauges and screen iDrive and didn't go "Tesla-Pad" in the center stack.

I just hope BMW doesn't get carried away with touch interface. I think they have the perfect balance of touch and "mechanical" interface in the G05. Buddy drove a Volvo that had the tesla like screen and it was a PIA to change the temp in the car. Especially since the volvo CPU would lag, freeze, glitch on occasion so doing something simple like turning up the heat and turning on seat heating would take longer. Also while driving, it would be more distracting.

They are doing this just so in a few years they can have an X6 Homage CS with analog gauges , regular automatic, and halogen headlights that they will charge a premium for .

As someone who has had 10+ service visits and am now going through a manufacturer process due to a defective/lemon unit where the driver's dash cluster keeps cutting out without warning, this is a really iffy move imo. I get it - not every car has issues, but enough have shown problems with the dash cluster control communications setup that this should really be thought through again and suppliers thoroughly tested before going mass market. Just my 0.02.

You can see the screens has adapted to the latest X7 prototypes as well.

It's not surprising that most manufactures are moving towards Tesla-ish interiors. Funny I think Telsa's interiors are their weak points of their car design. The new S and X are nicer, but not a fan of the yoke steering wheel. That said, I don't mind the i4 interior photos posted above. I wish there were a few more buttons, especially the programable numbered keys - I'm a huge fan of those.

For the first time ever..... I’m hating the future. It’s all plagues and screens.

I think for me it depends on what the screens can do and how they look. The trend seems to be to make look them look like an oversized iPad is being propped up, rather than integrated, and I think that just ends up making it look cheap imho.It looks like an afterthought than central to the car
Now if we could customise (within reason) the screens and what they do/display, then I could be a fan. There are some things I never use, whereas somethings could be better placed - I can't see the fog lights in my seating position, nor tell which is front or back for example. |
