Digital Key now available to Android!

Just announced for select phones and OS. I'm going to have to upgrade from my Pixel 2.

https://bmwi.bimmerpost.com/forums/s....php?t=1879953

December 1, 2021

Munich. Together with its partners BMW – in the context of the Car Connectivity Consortium – is continuing to press ahead with the development and distribution of the BMW Digital Key. Now the BMW digital key will be available for Android operating system-based smartphones. With this update, the number of compatible smartphone models is increasing and thus also the pool of BMW drivers who will be able to use the BMW Digital Key in the future. The BMW Digital Key is now available for Android smartphones, starting with Samsung Galaxy S21 Series and Google Pixel 6 and 6 Pro.

With the BMW Digital Key, customers can easily unlock and lock their BMW simply by holding their smartphone next to the handle of the driver's door. The engine can also be started when the mobile phone is placed in the BMW wireless charging compartment. To ensure maximum ease of use and security, the BMW Digital Key is stored on the secure element of the smartphone. It can be easily configured via My BMW app and is then available as an option for almost all BMW models. In the next release, it will be possible to pass the key on to five friends. The functionalities of the BMW Digital Key Plus based on ultra-wide band will also be introduced for Android smartphones in a future release.

BMW has been committed to establishing global standards in the field of keyless entry systems since 2018 and is considered one of the pioneers in the use of the smartphone as a digital car key. The latest stage of development is the result of a close collaboration between BMW, Google and Samsung for further improving the ease of use and availability of the digital key. BMW is also the first manufacturer to offer a system according to the global CCC standard (Car Connectivity Consortium) that is available for both iOS and Android.

Availability of BMW Digital Key for Android smartphones:

Google Pixel 6/Pixel 6 Pro: U.S., Canada, U.K., Ireland, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Japan, Australia, Taiwan and Singapore

Samsung Galaxy S21/S21+/S21 Ultra: France, Germany, Italy, Korea, Spain, United Kingdom, United States.

The S20 doesn't have UWB. I have an S21+ which is supposed to have UWB, but BMW Connected says my device isn't compatible also.

UWB = ultra wide band

I wonder if the Note20 ultra will be supported as it does have UWB hardware.

Just tried this on my S21, setup was fine but practicality is questionable.

I literality have to touch my phone on the door handle for it to work (and only 50% of the time lol)

NFC card is about the same. But at least it's thinner

I will use it when I do not want the bulkiness of the key in my pant pockets, usually when wearing nice formals!

Any tips to get it set up? I picked up my car yesterday and me and the genius spent at least an hour trying to get this to work with my s21 ultra. Unfortunately, the app just won't activate through Samsung pass. When trying to activate the bmw app looks like it does it's job but then you just sit and waits at the "add key to samsung pass" screen thinking and thinking and thinking. We uninstalled both apps, reinstall them, restart the car, restart the iDrive system, restart the phone. Etc etc
Need help!

Has anyone had any success getting the digital key to work with OnePlus phones?

Did you do anything special in Samsung pass to get it to work?

Got it to work after hours trying on my S21 Ultra! First, delete app cache and force stop MYBMW app. Second, go into Samsung Pass, Settings, See all devices using samsung pass and remove all connected devices. Restart the phone and wait until completly restarts.
Once it fully restarted, I had my car on and then went to MYBMW app, clicked on BMW digital key and started the process. After a short activation this will take you to Samsung Pass to start an account. Once you do get set up on Samsung Pass you will soon get prompted to turn off the car, make sure the 2 keys are in the car, click the box and then proceed. The first time I tried this method I was stuck on the charging pad for atleast 5 minutes when prompted. I felt like the wait was too long so I did the whole process again from start to finish and it finally let me set it up! Please let me know if someone needs help!!!

Can you leave the phone in your pocket to start the car, or do you need to physically put the phone on the console?

In the case of iPhone and iWatch, you have put to take them off your pocket or wrist and put them on the tray inside the console. After a while, I revert back to keys which can be left in my pocket or bag.

Nothing special. Works like a charm since I started using. So that I lost my key in the office, didn't even look for it for a week.

Thanks for confirming! I was going to change my Note20 Ultra to a Pixel 6 pro to use Android Key, but if I have to take out the phone every time, I rather use the fob.

You do not have to put your phone on the charging pad. You can keep it in your hand and hold it near the charging pad and it will start.
