What company for Extended Warranty?
We took delivery of our new X5 a couple weeks ago and declined the extended warranty options through BMW, but having gone through issues on pretty much every car we've owned for longer periods of time, I do think there's some value in the process. For example, my '18 Raptor with 76K miles just went in for a suspected oil pump issue, and my out of pocket will be $200 max, even if I need a new motor.
We got the extended warranty for that vehicle through Flood Ford (Flood is the company name, not like the car's underwater!), and it was ~ 1/2 the cost vs. what the dealer offered for literally the exact same coverage. Does anyone know of a company that provides a similar service for BMWs? I did some very surface level investigation and came up with the following companies that seem to provide decent coverage: - Fidelity warranty - Custom Edge by Warrentech - GMPP Master Guard - Pinnacle - Paragon Anyone here have any experience with any of them? Any other companies I should look at? |

This question gets tossed around a lot. Definitely reach out to Christine @ Steve Thomas BMW to see what their offer is on the BMW extended warranty. Should be a lot cheaper than what you were quoted at your dealer. You can use this to gauge against your third party options price wise.
Also look for an exclusionary policy so you’re covered for everything not explicitly excluded. Those are generally the best coverage. You’ll then compare the options based on what they are excluding. I won’t comment on the warranty companies though as I don’t have direct experience with them. I’ll let others chime in there. |

Me personally, if I ever buy the extended warranty, its through the manufacturer and usually AFTER the initial purchase. Finance managers always like to say its cheaper to buy it up front, but in my experience, its always been the same if not cheaper to grab it when im going into the last year of original coverage.

I got suckered into buying an extended warranty through the dealer. Seemed much cheaper than the BMW factory option, I'll be getting all my service from that BMW dealer anyway, and the guy said it is fully cancellable/refundable, transferrable, and also prorated refund based on timing.
I talked him down to less than half the original price and honestly don't think I could get him any lower (of course he still had some margin). However, still might not be a good deal for me. So should I cancel based on the below (looks like contract says cancellable for full refund within 60 days of contract date if no claims or prorated refund minus $50 after)? I assume I can buy a BMW factory warranty extension as long as I'm within my 4yrs/50k miles so it's best to just wait (even though some finance guys all claim $ goes up if not on first purchase b/c they get a bonus)? 84 month, 70,000 miles (so 3yr, 20k extension) Not BMW factory but supposedly better b/c can use nationwide anywhere and covers more than the BMW $100 disappearing deductible ($0 if performed at covered dealership network) Exclusionary warranty that has few listed exclusions $3,560 Here are the exclusions... View post on imgur.com And if I should cancel, should I try to get a BMW factory warranty now through Christine @ Steve Thomas BMW or someone else or just wait until closer to warranty expiration in 4yr/50k miles? I like to skip the extended warranty but if I ever do get one it would just be with the manufacture. I did want to get some data though for these types of discussions so last month I contacted Christine at GOLFFRR 's place for pricing. I did get pricing for the various plans as well as mileage although I personally think you should go Platinum. This was for a 2019 X5 with 40k miles and zero deductible.
84 months/75k miles $4450 84 months/100k miles $5150

So it's a lot less but as long as I can buy a warranty before mine ends in 4yrs for a fair price maybe I should cancel for now? What would you all do? |

BMW factory pricing is just a little more for 84mth/75k miles than my non-BMW contract is $3560 for 84mth/70k miles so I am definitely going to cancel my local dealer contract.
Then decision point is buy the BMW one now (realizing I guess I can get a prorated refund if needed early) or wait until closer to 4yrs/50k miles to see the price and if I want to buy it. I think I'm gonna skip the maintenance plan though. |

I would say wait and see how your vehicle is as far as warranty work goes. If it seems like quite a bit was performed then you may want to buy the extended warranty. If it was minimal, while not an exact prediction of the future, it may be worth skipping it.

Gotcha, so if you pay $3-4k now for 7yr/75k and then end up selling your car at 3.5 years (before the original manufacturer warranty ends), you could cancel the extended but probably only get half of the prorated cost back (even though you didn't use it).
But if you don't pay now for an extended warranty, the price will go up probably that same amount as you have higher mileage and are nearer the original warranty extension. If I do keep the car beyond the 4yr/50k miles, I definitely would want a contract but can't forecast the future. Hmm, someone make a decision for me lol. |

So it's peace of mind but lose money if I sell in 4yrs or save money now but pay more when I have an older/higher mileage car or if inflation/warranty costs continue to rise and I can't get one at a good price like now. A lot of other manufacturer's require the warranty to be purchased at car purchase or at CPO purchase only. Last edited by cltx5; 01-27-2022 at 04:09 PM.. |
