Car leaking when it rains in passenger front side

So whenever it rains when I get into my car I'm always greeted with a massive puddle on my floor mat. Any ideas where this is coming from I can point my Service center to?

Must pulled the mat up. Half inch of standing water all under the mat probably from it sloshing over the mat as I drove. It must be coming from up top but the Inside of the glove box is dry

Ugh -nasty. Could be a number of things but have you checked.. ..

1. Sunroof completely and properly closed
2. Sunroof drains, especially the passenger side one, completely open (unclogged)
3. Sunroof felt gasket in good shape, no rips, gaps, etc
4. Where on your headliner is it wet

Anyway, I'm sure your service dept will know where to look. For us, we experience each issue for the first time but the service guys see it all. The issue now is mold growth if you don't completely dry your carpet out. Not sure when you can get it into service but I'd dry it out by using a shop vac on the carpet and then put a fan on it, preferably heated air if possible and dry it out for a couple of days. Then, to prevent the carpet from getting soaked again, I'd cover the entire area with a solid piece of plastic so when it drips, assuming its coming from above, it won't soak your carpet again and make you do the vacuum and air dry dance over and over. Mold can form quickly.

I think this is coming from below. In the foot well. Everything above is completely dry. Just took the hose to everything and not a drop.

Makes me think this happens while driving through puddles because I just hosed the car down for 20 mins and not a single drop.

Right it's obviously coming in from above but I think under where the glove box is. Not from the roof / windshield.

I think it only comes in while driving

Most likely a kinked or clogged drain line on the passenger side. Mine had same problem. Took them 3 visits to figure it out.

Take a look at this video, starting at 1:38 on the time bar. This is not an X5 but still applies. You can open your sunroof, get up on a stool and look for any standing water. You can also slowly pour water in the sunroof channel and see if it drains quickly, slowly or not at all. I think there are either three or four drain holes/tubes but it looks like you are looking for the one on the passenger front but check both front ones while you are at it.

There was another thread regarding the rubber trim being too short on the sunroof that caused similar problem.

TSB : https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/20...05090-9999.pdf

I have a 2023, the sunroof rubber seal has a half inch gap.

I also have this sunroof seal gap but so far no sign of water entering the car. Should I ask my dealer to replace the seal?

Correction: The gap in my seal is on the driver's side but further back next to the fixed sunroof glass. Is this normal?

If anything, the gap caused wind noise or/and water leak issue. I don't have water leak issue, but I haven't driven the car during torrential downpour. I did notice wind noise at higher speed (above 60mph) I put a piece of tape on it to see if it helps with wind noise and I noticed quite a significant improvement.

I will bring it up next time I go into service and hopefully they will replace the seal. I don't think it should have a half inch gap on the sunroof. I rather not have the gap on the sunroof while I still have warranty.

The main leak is here, by the door. Is that still sun roof related? This car is leaking like a God damned civ!

That looked like clogged drain to me. Good luck, at least it's obvious for the service guys to look at. No 'Unable to replicate' BS!

Is bmw going to shampoo this carpet? There's been stagnant water down Herr for days. It already smells like a wet sock in here. I cleaned up what I could but it's been wet for a week

Yes.. If your look at the diagram above. The drain tubes run down the A-pillars to the bottom of the floor.
I think there is a joint in that area. So, the joint may have loosen and the water just shot out of the tubes in the the interior panels and into the car.

Are you park outside in the rain or testing with a garden hose? That's a lot water.

It's raining. There's no hiding from it. Fills up with about an inch of water an hour. Not including the inch that catches in my Mat.

I'm going to try taping a bag around the roof.

Feel bad for you OP. Like other people said, it's most likely sun roof drain issue. From as long as I can remember, it's been a "feature" not "bug" lol… I park outside in northeast region. I haven't had a single BMW that didn't experience sunroof leak yet….
