2023 X5 45e Fuel Leak
Just under 500 miles on our brand new 2023 X5 xDrive 45e. Everything is going great except I noticed a little slick under the rear end where I parked. Pulled the car out and smells like fuel.
I then recalled a light fuel aroma when parking her in the garage the last few nights. I crawled under the rear end and see this loose black plug with obvious signs of leaking. I pulled the plug out and it leads to an empty area. No idea what it is! We have a road trip planned this Sunday before I can take it in for service. Any indication on what is causing this gas leak? Thank you! |

Is that on the right side of car?
ETA: I'll just save some time- if it is on the right side, open the fuel filler door, pour some water in the filler drain hole beneath the cap and see if it comes out that plug Last edited by Tejas1836; 01-06-2023 at 10:04 PM.. Reason: ETA: |

My thoughts exactly, probably the excess drain plug. Maybe he's in Jersey, attendants there seem to keep spilling it around the filler tube.

Thanks for the lead. Unfortunately not on the right side. I did pour some water in the filler door to confirm and saw it come out down near the right passenger tire.
This hole is about 4" aft of the rear differential. Closer to center on the vehicle. The drip seems to stop after a while. Lost maybe a couple ounces of fuel, but it seems to happen after each trip. Below is what the cap/plug looks like removed. It was pretty loose so I suspect it was more to keep debris out than to keep fluid in. |

The 45e uses a pressurized gas tank to preserve fuel, so that rubber plug is not part of the fuel system. If there was a leak it would make sense that it might drip for a while then stop as pressure is released. It sounds like the dealer needs to take a look.
You could try preparing the vehicle for fueling as that vents pressure and see if it makes any difference. |

Yes i would definitely let the dealer handle it. But its puzzling since the fuel tank is not that far back, all fuel lines seems to be over to the front/passanger side too. So not sure how fuel gets there. Above that plug is approximately where the trunk floor storage is (at least on non hybrid models).

Also attached are two shots of the space during assembly and the filler pipe going into that space where the leak is coming from. Last edited by paul21; 01-07-2023 at 11:47 AM.. |

It's a 23 so it's still under warranty. I know you were probably hoping for some quick easy self fix by posting on this forum but if this really is a fuel leak, that is serious. Take it to the dealer.

Thanks to everyone for the help.
Dealer says fuel line is deformed causing the leak. I'm not sure where exactly the line runs or how it got to this area. Unfortunately parts from Germany are 6-8 weeks out. So, out of commission after having the vehicle for about 10 days. Coincidentally, a tree fell on my last new vehicle and took about 2 months to repair - all before I made the first payment. Dealer has me in a loaner. A 530i. It's an ok car, just not my x5! |

I had a 530 last time I was given a loaner. That 2 liter engine is OK overall but the throttle response was delayed when I needed to get out of a situation. On the plus side, the seating position felt better in the 5 series even though I have the luxury seat package in my x5. I miss driving sedans sometimes.

it also has standard sport seats while I have the luxury seating, but I’m surprised how nice the 530e’s seats feel. |
