Brand New X5 Rear Ended

We just took delivery of a 2023 40i m-sport last week, and my wife was rear ended this morning on the way to school. Luckily everyone is fine, and the damage isn’t too bad, but it’s such a bummer to drive away a new car and have it damaged immediately.

Drive recorder shows the guy clearly had failing brakes - his nose dips and the car hardly slows at all.

Hopefully just a bumper cover and some electronics, but I’m sure it’ll still be a $4k fix. My wife is pissed I’m so non-chalant about it, but I’m just glad it wasn’t my M5 😂

Glad nobody was hurt. That honestly looks very minor. Sucks regardless on a new vehicle but probably a very minor fix and should not affect reliability. Honestly, that's probably the best place you could have gotten hit.

I agree, I can almost pop most of the bumper cover back in place, but there are broken clips and the underskirt is snapped off, some electronics damaged, etc. But very minor, luckily the wife and kids are uninjured!

Major bummer! Glad everyone is OK. Having just went through something similar, I can completely understand where your wife is coming from! (Although, I was at nearly 3 years of ownership at the time...which is a big difference.)

Drive Recorder is hugely helpful. In my case, that made the liability conversation a trivial one with the insurance company.

Good luck!

Glad everyone's OK.

Just make sure their insurance doesn't try anything and make sure you get multiple estimates, at least one from a dealer.

I got rear ended in my 2015 Grand Cherokee. They replaced the bumper cover and IIRC, both mufflers/tailpipes got pushed in and had to be replaced as well. The other guy had State Farm, so it was a relatively easy process.

Thanks all. I actually thought about getting BMW to look at it, because I think it’s all bolt on parts they could handle. My dealer told me to go somewhere else but they might have assumed there was more damage than they could handle. It would be nice to have the continuity with the repair at the dealership in case something is messed up, and maybe avoid needing a carfax for such trivial damage.

So sorry to see this. Unfortunately I'm an X5 owner because someone did this to my F-Pace back in December. Absolutely get a body shop to put it on a lift and look at it. What I thought was maybe a new bumper and exhaust tips has turned into $14k damage including half the exhaust system (both pipes were pushed in and the mufflers crushed) and a new rear center suspension. That only became evident after they started removing broken parts.

Pics of what it looked like after the hit / what they've had to remove so far attached. I hope your experience is far smoother.

Ouch, that really sucks! Don't be surprised if the estimate comes in worse than $4k--here is almost $15k damage on my daughter's X3. It almost totaled the car out.

Wow, unreal - doesn’t look like much damage at all from the back. Sorry to see that.

Probably because the trunk was dented. My family had an incident with the upper trunk gate on their X5. I think the body shop told them that the part (just the unpainted upper trunk lid) was ~$7k or 8k.

That’s when you take the car and the insurance check and trade it .

This happened to a brand new (1 week old) 2023 45e purchased at the end of 2022, right before the tax credit law changes. It was the last/only 45e available in the US with their desired config. Insurance paid to get everything fixed. Car is back to perfect condition after the fix.

Tip: Automatic braking with the parking sensors doesn't work if you're going over a few mph.

They were backing up in sport mode for the first time, instead of hybrid mode which they normally used. The car moved faster than they were expecting and the computer did not brake to avoid the collision. Drive recorder did not activate (I think they might not have done the initial Drive Recorder setup at this point, so that might be why).

I made the same mistake shortly after getting my X7, but I managed to stop with my front bumper just touching the wall. No damage.

Based on how severely the metal shelf crumpled, you'd expect the bumper to have taken some damage, but surprisingly it was in perfect condition. The only damage was to the trunk lid & glass, and a nick on some plastic trim around the bumper.

Also just noticed that their car has black plastic trim on the wheel arches and the sides of the bumper. Apparently it's because theirs is luxury line. You need the M-Sport package to get painted trim. Disappointing, that's not what you expect on a $80k car.

Thanks. Just got quoted $7k damage. But more than I expected but also not surprising with all the parking sensors and cameras in the bumper.

It’s cleaned now too - terrible salt on the roads around here.

Ouch that sucks. Glad it's reparable. My 45e got hit by a teen texting when he let go of his brakes at a stop light. It was a collision <5 mph. It was the tiniest of dents barely noticeable. When I took it to the shop the other side of the bumper was completely cracked and the hitch was dented. My car was in the shop for over a month because of that hitch. It was about 3k worth of damage!

Hello OP do you have your car back? If so how does it handles?

Maybe schedule it soon so they can order parts, there could be a back order for some items.

Yes, it’s actually scheduled to go in next week. Hopefully it only takes a few days.

Hope it doesn't go in for that long but expect at least a week just in case. Especially if they need to paint or order parts that may be on backorder. Fingers crossed for you OP! Let us know how it goes.

Dang sorry bud. Glad everyone was ok. Feel your pain too...We had my wife's M50i for 2 weeks we someone backed into her in a parking garage while she and my daughter were at a ballet. Only damage was a couple paints scrapes and a few trim pieces on the front left corner. Took almost 3 months for the BMW collision center to get the parts😫
