Pressing Engine Off instead of Park
Shutting off the engine automatically puts the car in park. Does this shortcut hurt the engine/transmission/anything at all or is it safe to do when parking? Seems more efficient than pressing Park, then Engine Off.

I wouldn’t think so. I’ve been doing it since I got the car 3 months ago.

i personally don't rely on shutting off the engine to place the vehicle in Park. while it's a convenient safety feature, its reliability has come into question due to threads from folks whose vehicles drove off or rolled away after they thought they parked the vehicle. i always press the Park button first before shutting off the engine

I don’t know if the 50e is the same, but on the 45e, it differentiates how the vehicle is held: a green PARK indicates Auto Hold is holding the vehicle using the disc brakes while a red PARK indicates the parking brake is holding the vehicle. |

Never had an issue with just switching the engine off, ALWAYS puts car in park.

I'm quite sure the electronics are coded so that the moment one presses the Off button "Park" is engaged and the "System" is off! If the ICE is already off, there is no action for the electronics to do except kill the power to the Fuel/Spark, etc. Thus making the "Off" button a multi-action button and by contrast, the Park is a single action button,...for "Park" only!

I have been using this method for many years in my previous Mercedes-Benz (long bress of brake pedal) and Audi models (button). For some odd cost saving measure Audi and VW removed auto hold (still do it seems) and leave a blank space for auto hold below the parking brake switch for the US market since the early 2010s. Had to retrofit auto hold most recently in my previous 2017 Audi Q7 even though the cars have all the components to support it (electronic parking brake). 200 USD for the kit which included the switch, wiring to the CECM, and a little coding dongle. Various Audi dealers used the same old excuse: US consumers did not use it or were often confused why the car would not move if they pressed auto hold... Odd reasoning since now most Kias, Hyundais, Hondas, Toyotas with e-brakes have auto hold as standard. BMW's "how to video" shows exactly this. The user turns off the vehicle without first pressing P to turn off the vehicle: https://youtu.be/XO2CPvS5X6c?feature=shared |

I'm not sure why so many people do not like the auto hold function...I really appreciate not having to hold the brakes when stopped to keep the vehicle from crawling ahead, or if on a steep enough grade, going backwards.
If it is misadjusted, it can grab before you come to a full stop, but that can be fixed. That can be annoying. My X5 is the first one that remembers the setting...the previous BMWs I've had, it got reset each time you started it and that was annoying, but hitting the button became a habit. I'm glad it is 'sticky' on the G05. |

Seems logical as it's one less button to push. I wonder what happens if you push that at 5MPH

I have a tire 'hump' in my garage that I inch up to with auto hold enabled to get the vehicle exactly where I want it...you have to be subtle, but you can inch up to a spot with it on if it's adjusted properly. It worked the same on my last two BMWs with that feature.

It about embracing your laziness and finding joy in actively finding more ways to re-affirm it [ I am lazy and I know it ] By the way, I am one of those over cautious guys who stand beside the car, use the key fob to lock it and pull the handle to check if went through before leaving. LOL |
