My experience has been BMW NA will not help at all with replacing the vehicle. In fact they could seemingly care less if you buy another BMW. The process is supposed to take 1 to 1.5 months.

I just took mine to the dealer for the 2nd time. I love the car just hope they can fix it. Really stinks to pay in cash for a new car and take it in 5 times within 2 months...

Got a 2024 BMW X5 50e with I believe every possible option available. Really like it.

Mine is on its 7th visit now. At least this one is for a different issue (faulty HUD) than the last 6!

Watching your situation in particular with interest. No issues so far after my SME and wiring harnesses replacement.

I was told to wait until the new one arrived and they switched the license plate and done.

How does this work though? I'm begin told that BMW does the buyback and that's completely separate from purchasing a replacement from the dealer. Also, does your finance paperwork just get updated with the new VIN or is a new agreement drawn up at whatever the current rates and incentives are?

Keep in mind he did not get a BMW buyback but rather his dealer took his on trade/purchase. As you mentioned, the BMW buyback is a separate transaction from getting the new vehicle. The timing of when that happens will depend on your negotiations, state law, etc.

I would think you will need an invoice with sale price($0) so you can register you new car to officially transfer your license plate.

I really don't know internally how they did it, clearly it wasn't the first time and for me was mostly painless. Basically they called me when the replacement car arrived at the dealer, I made an appointment, and they just installed my license plate into the new car and went to finance to sign the papers such as when I first took delivery and done. My financing account was updated with the new VIN, meaning all of the payments that I made were "moved" to the new account. I'm still paying the same amount monthly and will end the same date that originally was going to end. I financed the car not leased it though.

The way I see it is that they buy your old car in X amount and you buy the new one with that money. How they manage internally the loss or who pays for that, I don't know. Maybe they even made money with the trade, I mean there are no 50e's in the market and they re-sold the old one in about a week. They just used one of their factory allocations to replace my car.

Been lurking here for a while, recently took possession of a new 50e two weeks ago (late Feb delivery, Jan build). Less than 120km in and a yellow CEL popped up. No information in the vehicle status and I don't have the device to check the error code myself, so taking to dealership next week. Will check tomorrow to see if it clears itself too...

Had 4-5 orange CEL instances that came and went on their own after driving a couple of times. Even an app update or full system update brings CEL as a way of notifying (like Windows update yellow circle or warning triangle). Seems annoying though as it just stresses me out every time it pops up and my eyes keep going towards it, expecting it to go away soon.
BUT this time it is sticking for 3 days now with 2700miles on the car. Roadside assistance couldn't see it at their end and asked me to go to the dealer. Took a service appointment for next week. Hope it only needs the standard 45 second reboot to clear it up and nothing is seriously wrong.

I actually referenced this thread to the service manager and he was shocked. Said BMW is going to have to come in and look at it vs them doing something which I was not aware of before. I guess I have had much better luck with every car I have owned.

They gave me an iX loaner so for what its worth, a little bit of fun changing things up with all electric and ridiculous sound system.

I'm really surprised that at this point some BMW managers don't know what's going on with their cars. It's been almost a year now..

They know exactly what is going on but play dumb to make it seem there are not widespread issues.

Just got a text saying they replaced the faulty expansion valve. They told me it was a high voltage issue. I don't know cars well but that seems like 2 separate things?

I'm going to spare you the pleasure of reading this whole thread. The expansion valve and the high voltage issue are the same. The valve gets stuck and the cooling system for the high voltage battery could not work as intended because the battery needs a temperature range to operate and charge. Most of the CEL's on the 50e's come from this issue.

Thank you very much. I have read through the entire thread multiple times but get confused and also frustrated at the same time seeing so many issues.

For $95k you would expect less issues, in my personal opinion.

I would expect fewer issues on a $25k vehicle. The error rate is astronomical, not sure I have ever run across a vehicle with such a level of issues. Perhaps:

Good news: no issues for four weeks since SME replacement.

Bad news: someone hit it while it was parked legally on a street last night. You haven’t lived until you have uniformed officers walk into a restaurant calling your name during dinner. The driver fortunately had insurance. Left front control arm broken, air bladder for left front wheel shot, left side of car damaged almost full length, front bumper damaged, and who knows what else underneath. It was quite an adventure getting it onto a flatbed with one wheel cocked to the side. The insurance adjuster gets her first look tomorrow. Enterprise gave me a 2023 45e with real buttons! So begins the latest episode…….

For me, it wasn't an expansion valve. It was various SME and software faults. Of course that's not to say that the valve wouldn't have gone bad too...
