Cost to replace oil pump 2019 X5
Hi - I bought a used 2019 X5 (Canadian manufactured) in 2023. My dealership in Fife, WA says it needs a new oil pump for $6K. It hasn’t failed yet but is “throwing the code” that means it is faulty.
Seems crazy to me and could use some advice…help? |

Fellow 2019 40i owner here. What is “the code”? Do you have a check engine light on or anything?
$6k sounds about right from what I’ve been reading (from the dealer). I won’t be pre-emptively changing mine, so depends on your tolerance for risk if it fails. My 2017 G30 540i has a B58 and is over 103k miles now with no issues. |

The 2019 oil pump impeller was made of plastic. Heat cycling make it fatigue and crumble internally. If your engine stops getting oil one day than the entire engine will need replacing.
It was redesigned with a metal one so this doesn’t happen. The oil pump is on the bottom of the engine and at the back. The whole engine gets removed inorder to replace it. It is a very labour heavy job. |

Thats very scary that this is like the 4th similar issue this week I am hearing about this. I was replying to a guy on reddit yesterday too!
Keep us posted man, I would also be wondering what kind of code you are getting -- any diagnostic report? 6k is huge, think an indie could do it for less? Or maybe its time to switch and gtfo. Really sucks BMW is having these major issues with thier cars as of late. Might extend my warranty even further. |

So this issue is happening with just the 2019 X5's ? Seems like a recall would be in effect soon? You can't have plastic parts melting and destroying engines it's just unacceptable, class action perhaps in the future

they wont recall unless people hurt themselves in the car, or is happens early enough that BMW dealerships start crying about it. Nor has happened yet -- to boot most people are out of warranty.

Is there any idea or figures out there of what percentage of 2019 are experiencing this issue? Under or over 10% for example?

Again I would love to know what the code is... so I could look myself. What you can do is run the engine hot about a 30 minute drive, and then try to manually measure the oil. I am reading around the forums that if it fails around 12-18% the oil pressure is too high and the test fails. and indie will do it for around 2500-3000. But the subframe needs to drop and that's the big part -- thank god it doesn't require the engine to be pulled like some other chassis.

My 2020 X5 40i had an oil pump fail within the first year of ownership. It was covered under warranty. However, the part was so backordered back then, that it was going to be 6 to 8 months before they could repair it.
I ended up Getting a 2021 on a good deal due to that. I thought maybe it was just bad luck, but seems like it’s been an issue?

1. The impeller is NOT plastic. 2. The engine does NOT need to come out. Some of your people need to stop talking nonsense and talking without knowing. |

The job is around 8 hours. The subframe needs removing, and so does the oil pan. The pump can then be removed. And reverse after new pump is in. |

Funny how the oil pump in a N55 is very similar to the pump in the B58TU, including the “plastic’ internal parts, which the updated pump still has, and yet the N55 is not know to have oil pump issues, but it has happened and the symptoms are similar. I have 180K in my N55 and all see normal. |
