Extended Warranty Vs taking the risk
Hello,
I will be buying out my lease X5-2021. It has about 41K miles. I plan to keep it for another 2 years /30K miles. What are the things I need to be cautious of? What parts usually break down between 40K and 70K? Is an extended warranty worth it? If so, from where? Are there any electronic issues that may crop up? I have been doing regular maintenance. The tires need to be rotated, and the brake fluid has to be changed now. I appreciate any help you can provide. |

I went with an extended warranty from Fidelity. An exclusionary plan. That’s on my 2021 X5M. Ran under $900/yr w $250 deductible.
While generally warranties are always a loss BMW V8s are quite renowned for their issues. Also there are so many gadgets and gizmos on these cars. Some chance you could break even. Cheers, X |

Extended warranties is all a very personal choice and peace of mind, if that's a thing you worry about. I do, so I got it.

I can only wish it could be obtained by purchasing something 😊 Essentially extended warranty is a gamble, it literally is. You bet that the car will break down over time based on the available data. Personally I always bet against the odds…and often win! |

I think it's pretty obvious that owning a car as complex as a modern BMW whose parts and labor are both very expensive without some kind of warranty is a substantial risk. You can either accept that risk or hedge it, but one way or t'other you're going to be paying, most likely.
Your car is relatively new and you're only looking for to own 20-30k miles and a couple of years of ownership, so I suspect you'd be able to get a decent extended warranty for not too much $$. If the piece of mind it gives you is worth it to you, I'd say go that route. Otherwise, I'd say that you should set aside whatever the equivalent monthly payment on that policy would be as a self-insurance fund. That way you'll have at least some assurance that a problem isn't going to cause you undue hardship. At some point, though, extended warranties become very expensive and don't look like a good value. That's where we are at with my wife's 2017 540i. It's got 107k and just came off the last extended warranty. The car, pretty fully loaded, has been meticulously maintained and has given us few issues. That's the good. Additional extended warranties, though, are going to cost us $5-6k/yr. That's the bad. So we're kinda between a rock and a hard place. Personally, I'd rather get rid of the thing in while it's perfect, but my wife loves the car. So we cut a deal. She can keep it, but she has to put $500/month into a separate savings account as "insurance". It'll either get spent to maintain this car or, at some point, will be part of the contribution to the down payment on a new one. She's not happy to have a "car payment" again, but that's simply the reality of owning complex, expensive to maintain vehicles. |

I think it depends on what coverage you actually receive.
History is littered with the remains of buyers of extended warranties who didn’t read the fine print and only later discovered that 80% of the vehicle BOM isn’t covered… |
