50e settings drive modes... ICE on 100% of the time?
Question... I have only driven a hybrid while working in Europe for a few years... very different from a 50e in that it was a Mercedes E320 Estate Blutech Diesel Hybrid lol.
I can say I did not utilize the electric mode for anything other than the added power. putting it into sport mode every time kept the ICE engine going and I had the boost from the electric motor. What are the possible settings in the 50e to do the same? I had a loaner 5 series hybrid recently but didnt take the time to learn how the system works. Is it possible to set it up to have ICE on always but not have EVERYTHING in sport like suspension and transmission? |

I believe there are 2 options to do what you are asking:
1. Select the "Sport" mode button on the console and choose "Sport Individual" and adjust the drivetrain and suspension in the menu. I do not think you are able to adjust the transmission mapping in this case 2. Select the "Hybrid" mode button (default) and then press the "Battery Hold" button on the console which should engage the ICE but you would be technically operating the vehicle in "Hybrid" mode for suspension and transmission. I have not confirmed #2 in all driving conditions but that seems to be the response I get when I use the "Battery Hold" button |

If your goal is to have the ICE running all of the time why are you getting the 50e? You would be better off getting the 40i or M60i. Obviously the 50e may be a bit quicker but that likely will be negligible in everyday usage.
As mentioned, you can keep it in Sport mode.

Unlike a mild hybrid where the a/c compressor doesn’t run when the ICE is not running, the PHEV X5 uses an electric compressor, so while stopped you have full HVAC control…while you may prefer the performance and (muted) engine sounds with the ICE on, hybrid is often fine…it will turn the ICE on when it determines you’re asking for more power. Around town, that may be never.
Electric compressors may start showing up on other models, but at least with BMW, they’re now in just the PHEVs, and BEVs. |

Ice always on in hybrid mode is possible if you shift into “S”. For pre LCI, push shifter to the left from “D”. For LCI, I think 2nd click downward from “D”.

In hybrid mode, it depends on where and how you’re driving. Even in EV mode, if you press the pedal far enough, the ICE will come on. It’s a function of trying to operate in the most economical way. The combined power is always available when you mash the pedal, but will come on earlier, if the computer thinks it needs it based on how you’re driving.

coming from an M50i and contemplating an X5M or M60i, it doesn’t make sense that you’re even entertaining the thought of a 50e which I don’t think will satisfy you either physically or emotionally UNLESS those urges are gone or tamed

I am with other about 50e isn’t the right car is you want to keep ice on 100% of the time. Even compare to 40i, you are carrying 600lb of dead weight, and a magnitude more complex drive chain, all without taking advantage of the Edrive components. Why here as well??

FWIW, with the mild hybrid now in the X5’s, the complexity is nearly the same…yes, you don’t have the plug-in charging unit, but you have an electric motor in the transmission, an extra (albeit very small in comparison) battery, with some regeneration, but as to complexity, they’re more similar than different.
The weight difference between the V8 and the PHEV isn’t really all that much, and the weight is down low in the chassis with those batteries. Yes, it’s a much larger difference when comparing to the I6, but it has more power so that shouldn’t be an issue if getting out of your own way is thought to be an issue. |
