X5 4.0I with 21 inch wheels or 22 inch wheels

Hi, I am in the market to purchase a new or slightly used X5. If I get the black 22 inch wheels as they look the best on the X5 do I have to worry about getting stuck somewhere if the tire explodes? There is no replacement tire in the cargo area so the only way is to call road side assistance? How reliable are those 22 inch tires?

If u have many potholes or bad roads you don’t want 22’s and you’ll need an alternative in the winter (dedicated winter set). And you can order the x5 with a space saver spare or buy one aftermarket. I have 11k trouble free miles on my 22” P Zeros but I live in the south.

Good advice above. I would just suggest you give up your quest for a 4.0i since those are very rare, the 40i should be much easier to find.

Most of the time if it was originally optioned with the 22s it automatically comes with a spare. At least that was the case when I specd mine. If it doesn't have one you can get one cheap. I think the 22s have a decent side wall. As has been said if you live in an area with craters everywhere they might not be a great option but I've personally never had any issues with 22s. Go big or go home. Knock on wood.

Thank you for advise. I live in NY. Mostly parkways and highways are pretty decent. How much would be to replace 22" tire? like 500 bucks at least? I bet you would have to change both wheels if something happens with the tire.

Our 2025 was ordered with the black 742 22” wheels. The spare tire is included with wheels matched to summer performance tires that are not run-flat. For NY, you should also expect to need all-season or snow tires for driving below 40F. The rubber on summer tires is not designed for cold weather and they can crack and fail. Some either have two sets of wheels, swap tires, or avoid driving when cold. The staggered 22” tires are indeed expensive. Oem continentals are around $450 each, with rears slightly more and fronts slightly less than that.

The stock continental that I have are a little over 1700 bucks to replace all 4 on tire rack. Obviously you then have to pay to install on top of that. Those are actually reasonable compared to some of the other options which approach 2500 bucks for 4!

Nice, I found them. A set of 4 tires would be 1,735 at tire rack. That is a good deal.

Thankfully NY is big and I am not from Buffalo or upstate NY area. I live in Brooklyn and it seems that we have like a few cold days below 40F in a year. I don't know if it is due to climate change.

Hmm, it is very strange when you purchase an 80K car with 22 inch wheels and they only come with summer tires. At this day and age they should have an option to choose 22" all season tires especially for people that live in northern USA or Canada where it is colder.

Back in 2010 I used to lease 2010 Edge Sport with the factory 22" rims. Nothing ever happened to the tires after 3 winter seasons in NY.

It is very hard to find 22" All seasons that fit and they are very expensive, over $700 a tire for the rears. Since the 22"s are fairly low profile they will not do well in the snow so folks get a set of 20's for winter.

What about the 21" M sport Y spoke wheels. I read, I pretty sure that they are run flat tires. I wonder if 21 inch would be safer then 22 inch? or the same thing?

The 21's are run flats but they are summer tires also. There are a couple of winter options and an all-season but those are actually even more expensive. I would imagine the 21's would be a little better in the snow especially with winter tires.

I think it is all personal preference, more than any measurable objective difference. I like 741 style myself, but being a family car, I need all seasons. It is not like I will do any aggressive driving with a 5000lb SUV, so I choose 740 square all season from factory. I am in the market for 741 fronts, I have 2 now. When I get all 4, I will run 275/40/R21 with 741 all season square setup

I do like the diameter of 22 or 21 inch wheels of 10.5 in back. Looks pretty beefy without doing any further mods. Most SUV's don't have that.

The only thing I could say there’s less options on a 21 inch tire and a lot more options in a 22 so I probably would stick with the 22 for better options on tires and do 20 for a winter package

Bro, I live in Brooklyn. There is barely any snow. Maybe a day or so. There are snow cleaners showing the snow. There does not seem as much snow in Brooklyn NY since 1996 snow storm.

it is not only the snow but also the cold weather. You can be in the 20's and 30's from December through February. You don't want to run performance tires in the winter in NYC.
