Trunk stops opening after a few seconds
Periodically when the trunk is opened while I'm sitting in the car (picking up a passenger), they'll put their stuff in the trunk and close it. Then when I park and try to open the trunk, it only opens about 12 inches and then stops. I have to manually lift it the rest of the way.
This only occurs when parked and after the trunk has been opened with the vehicle running. Any suggestions to remedy? My tailgate height in iDrive is set at max, so it's not that and everything works normally as long as I don't open the trunk while the vehicle is in drive. |

Also, does the 12” rise also occur if you use any method of closing…like have you attempted closing the lift gate using the interior switch…or has this issue only occurred when it was closed using the switch on the lift gate? Was the lower tailgate also opened & closed when this issue arises?

I actually did reset iDrive while the vehicle was on shortly before this happened (for an unrelated reason) most recently. Perhaps this resets the lid motor too and it needs an open/close to reset? |

Well, it happened again today and I haven't reset iDrive recently so that's not the cause. I dropped it off at the dealer and will hope they are able to diagnose something that only happens occasionally. If they're lazy, they may just open the trunk once, see that it works that one time, and call it fixed...

My X5 has been in dealer prison for a full week now for this and a parking sensor issue. They stated the trunk was not aligned properly and that's why it wasn't opening all the way sometimes. What doesn't make sense to me is why it would open about 6 inches and then stop rather than not open at all. If there was an alignment issue, wouldn't the latch not let go at all?

There’s a sensor in the system that looks to see if the motion is inhibited by using excessive force, which can cause it to stop to prevent hurting someone similar to the power windows from pinching hands, head, etc. Dont’ know if that’s the issue, but misaligned could look like excessive force is needed.
Also, if someone manually tries to close the power tailgate, that might give the calibration some grief. |

My trunk is back to opening only a few inches again--intermittently.
I noticed that I can make it happen if I hold the trunk release button on the rear hatch for a second instead of pressing and instantly letting it go. Perhaps this is an indication that the button is getting stuck? |

Anyway, that happens to me regularly. If the foot sensor doesn't work for whatever reason, I often use the rear latch rather than reach into my pocket for the fob. Sometimes it won't open all the way. Maybe I'm holding it too long, or not long enough. I don't worry about it, since it only happens under those circumstances and works as expected with the fob and interior button. |
