2020 m50i - Transfer Case 2nd failure

I got my transfer case replaced at roughly 60k miles last year at the dealer. My extended warranty covered the repair. This same part I’m being told by Indy shop is bad again. Would the dealer have any obligation to repair this on no cost? Since the part failed within 13 months.

No clue if my statements are correct, but if I recall , isn't it 24 months on parts installed at the dealer and -back in the days-, some other parts used to be lifetime like a water pump if it was paid retail under on a repair and failed again, but the labor was on you.

Well, first off, the dealer you used to replace it 13 months ago would have to agree that it's bad once again. Then the discussion on part warranty will begin. I'm thinking you get a 12 month warranty but it can vary by the part that was replaced and I've seen some warranties that will only cover a second replacement if the car itself is still under warranty. You're going to have to give that dealer a call and have a discussion but in the end, they will need to be the ones to determine it failed. Do you know if they put in a new or refurbished or used part 13 months ago? Seems odd it would be failing again so soon.

Nope. Mine failed 2nd time by leaking fluids. Installed unit was defective. Unfortunately mine was 1 months past warranty and no 12 month warranty is on warranty replacements. Dealer was not willing to take responsibility even though it's a factory defect. This was bmw of Dallas. In my opinion Trash service trash technician. Beware lol

That's a bit unsettling to hear for me since I bought my X5 from there.

The warranty ends at the stated period. If you have a warranty repair done at month 46 of a 48 month warranty there is no warranty usually. There is no statement in the warranty that I can find for warranty period for a repair done inside the 4/50K warranty that extends it. That BMW wouldn't do a goodwill extension of a repeat repair is not good. The goodwill repairs often require dealer contribution to the repair and the dealer may not go to bat for you as they do not want to pull some money out of their pocket. I worked at dealers 35 years ago and then for a European manufacturer (not BMW) for almost 30 years. The dealer and the manufacturer both look at these things through a lens of loyalty to dealer, loyalty to manufacturer, and attitude of customer.

Will keep everyone posted. Currently dealer doing diagnostics. Asked for my paperwork. I got the work done in bmw Austin but now I have moved to Chicago so dealer is near here. They mentioned that as long as the part is defective, it is covered for 24 months. If it’s, workmanships fault, then it won’t be covered so fingers crossed

- it honestly sounds like something else failing. I hear a turbo like hiss upon acceleration/decelaration. Another Indy shop told me that it could be the diff so not sure what’s wrong so I guess waiting on dealers diagnostic. Transfer case when it failed last time was more of a shudder at low speed issue so different symptoms

It was a front did. Replaced and fixed but transfer is leaking due to improper workmanship (incorrectly installed 2 bolts)

Glad the front diff got sorted out.

For transfer case incorrect installation, can they correct and refill fluid?

What is the exactly two bolts because mine was replaced amd is leaking just like you described. They refused to take care of it but I am interested in what is the exact problem and how they fix it

I reached out to the dealer where I had it replaced. They are willing to work with me so far, either replace the part under 2 year warranty or hopefully them paying to fix if the issue is caused by workmanship.

The dealership I had this issue fixed at is currently working with the dealership near my home to re do the diagnostic to figure out root cause of the issue. Will keep everyone posted but it sounds promising that it will be taken care of

The two bolts are the Guibo bolt and the flange on the front side were flip flopped. The longer bolt installed incorrectly is supposedly touching the seal and causing it to leak
