Adding sub to HK - gut check for plan
Have not messed around with car audio much since about 30 years ago. Have always been disappointed with the HK system in my 2022 45e with the HK system and think adding a proper sub may fix it. Thinking of adding a Kicker 51PTRTP12 amplified sub and using the Technic pnp harness. A few questions:
- any thoughts on this setup? I like the idea of using this sub because it faces downward so I can still toss stuff on top of it and lose a minimal amount of storage. 45e has no real under-floor storage so that's not an option for me. - should I get/use the technic LOC or just use high-level inputs from the technic harness to the sub (it accepts high-level)? If using high-level input, it seems I do not need to use a remote turn-on signal. - Any thoughts on how to attach this thing to the floor? Thanks! |

- Match UP 10DSP (Amp/DSP) - Audison APBX 10 AS2 (10", active Sub) - Match UP W8BMW-S (Underseat woofers). I think that the DSP/Amp is a must. Then, with a calibrated mic, you can do time alignment, individual EQ, levels on the speakers. This will improve the sound. You can also add the Sub. With the DSP, and with the Mic again, you can adjust the Sub to sound good. I have to time align it, and EQ it a bit, to make it sound right. I did the Woofer swap first... it definitely helps, but not sure if it was worth it. I might have been able to make the system sound right without them too. I will never know... since I swapped them right in the beginning. The Audison 10" sub fits really nicely in the under the trunk area. Also, there is a great car audio forum with a lot of smart audio guys: https://www.diymobileaudio.com They helped me a lot in setting up everything, and dialing in the system. |

The kicker box is a good unit, I would add some Velcro on the bottom edges (scratchy side obviously) to keep it in place. |

Incase you decide to go a simpler route - 20 min install and while initially it didn't sound good, it sounds amazing with HK after about 20-30 hours of breaking in. Good luck with your project.
