Smelly air conditioner

Hi,

I have a 2021 BMW x5 xdrive40i with ~27K miles on it. I hardly use the air conditioner, but when I do, it stinks quite bad.

I was told that it could be due to a bad evaporator in addition to just having some mold build up.

Have anyone had a similar issue and how was it dealt with? thanks

search cabin air filter and evaporator. several threads address the issue
