When I read the posted repair order it looks like pump was changed due to the whining noise and the inability to check oil level was not able to be duplicated. I am unsure if B58 has an oil pressure sensor but low oil pressure may be a reason the oil level check aborts.

Definitely not common, there are a few circumstances on the internet that have everyone all freaked out.
Does it happen? Sure. Enough to say it’s common? No.

My moms 740i and my buddies x3 40i both had oil pump failure under 50k miles. Both well maintained cars. The x3 modded and the 740 bone stock. I know 3 people with pre 2020 40i's and if 2 of them had oil pump failures its either really unlucky or more common then thought.

I have two pre 2020 40i’s in my garage, one with over 110k miles and the other at 50k. Neither have an issue. I spent a ton of time researching this and have come to the conclusion that there just doesn’t seem to be much data out there about cars experiencing the issue.

Not saying it doesn’t happen but I wouldn’t scare anyone off over it. Then again, plenty of people get all worked up over it. Guess it depends on which camp you’re in. 2 out of 3 is pretty unlucky though.

Putting out there because this thread was somewhat revived. If you search you’ll find lots of stories that oil measure function quitting early means a bad oil pump. Plastic ports in 2019 G05 would shred apart and cause engine damage.

Not a cheap repair to replace the pump but that is the best solution on a 2019 before damage happens.

I have a 2020 x5 40i the measurement won't go over 20% does it mean oil pump is going bad? Or can it just be software issue?

My issue was that the oil filter cartridge wasn’t properly snapped in by the oil serviceman. When I tried to measure the oil level, it would always stop at 17%. This happened on my F10, so I simply unscrewed the oil filter housing and found that the filter had remained in the engine. I pulled it out, snapped it into the oil filter housing, screwed the housing back in, and was able to measure the oil level with no issues after that. Just sharing my experience.
