Dealer used 0w-20 instead of 0w-12

Hi all,

Just creating this post as information.

Had our 24 X5 in for it's first "dealer" oil change yesterday. I always change at 5,000 miles so I do one in between as well. I used 0w-30 on it's first change.

Anyway, when we picked it up I looked at the ticket and it stated they used LL-22FE+ which is 0w-20 oil. I wasn't shocked as I've seen dealers use mostly what they have on hand and was actually happy they used that over the 0w-12. Although still not a huge fan of 0w-20 either, it has to be better than 0w-12 as far as protection for the engine. 0w-12 seems to be hard to come by from what I've heard and like I've said, dealers sometimes only tend to keep certain oils in bulk. My dealer seams to use the 0w-20 and 0w-30 for the most part.

So, I know a lot of people really don't like the idea of 0w-12 in their engines. It may be one of those things you could request a higher weight when taking it in for service. BMW loves to confuse everyone on oils. But my dealer putting in 0w-20 when in my manual it omits this weight, kind of shows as long as you use an oil with the BMW cert you should be fine. And after warranty, just keep your oil changed at decent intervals and enjoy your car.

Hope this helps.

What was the part number on the receipt? My receipt also says LL-22FE++. I googled the part number (83-21-5-B51-3A1), and some bmw parts site shows 0W-12(not sure if im reading the parts name right). I will try asking for 0W-20 next time. Im in the deep south and water-like viscosity isnt probably needed compared to colder climate requirement.

Mine was LL-22FE+ with only 1 plus. You have 2 ++ which is the 0w-12.

Hope that helps!

I had mine done last month and this is also what’s listed on mine. Dealers are now able to get this spec in larger bulk.
