Ceramic tint pano roof?
Recently bought 2021 M50i with the sky lounge from the executive package. Wondering if anyone has ceramic tinted their pano roof. Thinking about doing a clear ceramic tint just to keep from heating up in the summer and hopefully keep the shade open more often on sunny summer days. If you, have you noticed a difference in the car temps after applying the tint? Could the tint “interfere” with the roof’s LED ambient lighting at night?

A few threads on this with mixed opinions.
- Some think it can actually add heat to the glass, making it prone to cracking. - Some think it can cause warranty issues if the glass cracks. - Some think it might improve safety by holding the glass together if it does shatter. - It is likely to reduce cabin heat/UV, though. I'd be tempted to add it, but not sure I want to make the glass itself hotter while under warranty given some shatter incidents. I guess we'll never know why a few pano roofs have shattered, which would help tremendously. Probably something post-warranty for me unless the dealer will do it, figuring by that time any defect-related shattering would be ruled out, warranty a non-issue, additional heat in the glass probably not super material to glass longevity, cooler cabin + UV block is nice, and if for any reason it does shatter then it might help reduce shards flying through the cabin. |

I live in mid Atlantic Virginia with the hot and humid summers. i got all passenger windows tinted, and that’s been enough to attenuate the greenhouse heat. I did not tint the sunroof due to the risks noted above. I fervently precondition the cabin when conditions warrant, too

I haven't had any issues with it for at least 18-20 months.
Here is my understanding of it....but it's not conclusive as others had had cracked sunroofs without tint. 50% is as dark as you want to go on the sunroof. Not due to the color shade itself but the -specification- of it. It's still letting more heat transfer/bypass the film whereas the next grade darker is also retaining/absorbing (it's been awhile since I've poured over specs) 15-17% more heat than just letting it bypass through the film We've had full summer outings where it's sat outside for almost a full day in the sun I think it's luck of the draw.... Thanks. This is good insight. I’ll probably start with ceramic tint on the door windows and maybe windshield and see how that works. Seems like the risks might not be the reward.

Not tinting a sunroof due to it exploding is just a myth, tint if you want. We see sunroofs go all the time and they aren't tinted.

I think the =reward= is there though. The pano roofs are so huge that IMO, having even 70% tint with the fact that there is heat reduction ------aka, creature comforts while driving in Summer Sun is worth it

Mine has been ceramic tinted for about 3.5 years. Did a light 70%. Knock on wood...no issues.

Many get their front windscreens PPF'd, so wondering if applying the tint outside of sunroof and getting that PPF'd would be any good... That will prevent the heat from building in the glass. (I know, TB said above that it's just a myth . )

You may have a point, but to counter argue, there must be some reason for untinted sunroofs to explode - un even pressure perhaps or existing flaw in glass? By that argument, tinting sunroof would be just another reason.... (Just thinking aloud)

Edit: There is no such thing as heat building up in the glass to the point of it exploding. That would take about 500 degrees F.

While I am no expert on this subject, uneven heat would create uneven expansion of glass...

That may or may not be be true but don't see how that applies in this instance.

Going on 30 months since having the sunroof tinted with 70% XPEL Prime XR Plus. I'm able to drive with the shade open year-round, a/c set to 69, and fan speed at the 2nd lowest speed. Driving back from PCD in the middle of July we had it closed, but since having it, all windows, and the windshield tinted it is a huge difference.
Though when we park somewhere outside for an extended period we do close the sunshade. |

This was a BIG deal on the F150 forums with gigantic pano glass. No one could ever validate the claim that tint caused any of the breakage (they're were a handful that claimed it, but remember that ford sells F150's at the rate of 10 per hour, so a handful could roll off the line in 45min ).
Alas, everyone that is using 50% or greater ceramic, has never had any issues. |

Tinted my pano at 70% 6 months ago. Very noticeable heat reduction in the cabin. No issues to speak of with it. Very glad i did it

MoinMoin i can feel the heat from the panoroof radiating inside even when the panoshades is closed (it is thin fabric anyway). Added 70% ceramic tint, very noticeable difference, ac doesnt have to work so hard to cool the cabin down even if my panoshade is open all day.

I am sure the large glass of the roof let me head more than a solid metal roof, even if shade is closed It is why home window with single pane, even with shade close, get home hot. I have been wanting to tint the roof glass and front row glass since we got the car, just never get a chance to complete the job.
