Fast driving in the new X5 50E? Comparing a RRS PHEV
I am cross shopping these two and want to hear your thoughts
Have had the RRS PHEV for 3 weeks for now and it's a great car so far. I am though torn a bit and would like to do some research

“Are we talking ‘fast’ like effortlessly cruising at 80 mph, or ‘fast’ like trying to gap Mustangs at every stoplight? The X5 50e is rock solid on the highway—feels like it was built for the Autobahn. But if you’re hoping to turn it into a track weapon, well… physics might have some thoughts on that. What kind of ‘fast’ are we talking here?”

My 50e with no tuning does 0-60 in 4.44 and 30-80 in tad over 5 seconds. Very swift. I did the same thing you’re doing for the RRS Autobiography. Way too high for my wallet with no edge in highway performance or otherwise. Sweet interior though and you don’t see a billion of them like you do our X5

Fast driving in what way?
I’m regularly surprised at how fast so many owners seem to want to go in these SUVs. My 45e is probably the quickest car I’ve ever owned, and yet I’ve got one of the slower models. It used to cost like a grand to order cars with the bigger engine and go faster. Now it’s like $20k but even the slowest X5 is faster than my Porsche 911 or V8 M3, so what’s the point? I feel like I drive plenty fast and have never needed more power. I guess it confuses me where anyone is using all this speed on normal roads, in cars weighing almost 6k lbs.

I need to be able to travel fast and safe. By safe meaning I can trust the car. When I go through Germany we have a good steady pace.

I feel like the price in Europe is almost the same for the RRS and the X5

RRS is costlier than X5 in UK.

Personally I think having an effortlessly fast daily is awesome. It means the yo cars can be more about the experience vs just speed. It's also ready to go any time, any where, any conditions. You get some nice V8 sounds (admittedly I could use a LOT more of that). It takes the sting out of not getting to drive Corvettes anymore, and having to drive a dad car, at least it's not a boring dad car. |

I currently have the 50e, and I take it for cross Europe trips with the family - I’m on one now. I’d say it’s quick enough, objectively speaking, but subjectively it’s all about what you think is quick, your reference power levels, and whether you drive solo or with family.
Case in point: my reference for speed is probably the 2022 Panamera G2 Turbo S e-hybrid, which didn’t feel quick until you go on the autobahn, as it pulls hard from 200-300 km/h. Similar but less impressive somehow was the 992S, but both Porsches had a more immediate power delivery for obvious reasons. By contrast, the 50e is fast but doesn’t invite you to go that fast all the time. It can do fast but it’s not egging you on. If you want that sports-car feel then the M is the way to go. The 50e feels like a very comfortable cross-continent cruiser, but it would prefer do so from 150-200 km/h instead of 200-250 km/h. FWIW: I don’t care much for 0-60 (or 100 km/h) acceleration, if you’re doing cross-continent you likely care more about what the most pleasant cruising speed is and if you can maintain that most easily (meaning, slowing for traffic and then pulling to the speed you cruise at again). In addition, cruising speed is not just about power, but handling, NVH, etc. I do multiple cross continent trips a year and I prefer the Panamera over the arguably quicker 992, but the 50e is a great car for it - fast enough, solid handling, quiet, spacious. Try the RR though, I haven’t yet. |
