Good on you Joe, quite enjoyed that. I just watched all parts backwards but I plan to watch it from the start with my son.
All very interesting this stuff. I have a father in law who's into early Rolls Royce. Knocking around with him I bought a 57 Bentley for a resto project. The history is similar in some ways to BMW with how war makes, breaks, and pivots a car manufacturer. In RR/B case I think however there hey day was pre war, with arguably my car the last of something half decent. That's all subjective of course but the resto costs verse to the finish vale sure isn't, nor some of the so called development and refinement. Anyway as a kid I always though BMW had a style to them, but always viewed them as expensive so never went there. Then with my son turning 16 and looking for something to be cool in when licensed, a 2010 E92 330d m sport was settled on. It was a lot of car for the 15k paid and the build quality was still like new. The wife and I liked it so much and it was almost as economical as her 1.5lt Toyota Prius. So we had a rush of blood and bought an 2010 E93 330d m sport for ourselves. For us it was luxury at a sensible price, refinement, handling, power, big brakes, novel hard top convertible, and a great sound system. Again all for 15K. So given a 330d can get up and go, race driver training, drifting training, or any car control type education has become of interest for the son. My intention of getting him into factory built sports car opposed to a back yard build, then learning how to drive it seems to be evolving. We are planning a trip to Germany in a couple years for schools graduation, so a trip to BMW's factory and Nuremberg Rink are becoming of interest. I tell him if he studies hard and becomes a pilot he will able to afford whatever BMW (or sports car) he likes. Regardless I think he will find your history series quite informative and inspirational. Good on you. |

This is so nice to hear. I have really enjoyed making them for my own education as well. I have 2 sons and we’ve been watching them together and they are so encouraging. I actually went out with a friend this morning to a cars and coffee and he let me drive his e46 m3. My first time ever. I gotta say that experience has had me smiling all day. Hearing that S54 hum at nearly 9000 rpm is a thrill that just keeps on giving. I love this community I’m getting to know. |

Yes I have become a bit intrigued with the marc. I mean all marcs probably have an interesting history, but I can see BMW has positioned itself to be a car for almost anyone. Not just elites, commons, or quirkies. Even my wife who's a boring slow conservative driver prefers her E93 over what she loved before.
What's good for me wright or wrong, is they plumet in value as they age. So my 100k m sport cost 15, and as mentioned still like new virtually. A mate suggested BMW to me as a first car for my son, because his E92 325I cost 6K. The look was right but not the fuel consumption for a kid on a casual job. So 2lt diesel become of interest but concerns around timing chain and making the power of a diesel sound sexy to a young male led us to the 3lt. I'm a bit spooked by its power but that then started this driver training path. I figured all young blokes will drive there car too fast, but to be honest I'd rather him in something with big brakes, big grip, good suspension and low centered handling, opposed to a basic chicks car like a Kia etc. Its also been fun starting to learn how to keep the thing on the road. His grandfather has a hoist and with youtube, forums, and internet shopping its not so hard to repair ones car at a fair price. Plus its the kick off point for a different level on enthusiast. Look forward to the next episode as it feels with 2 BMW all new to us we have our own show going on hear. |
