Lightbulb Analysis: Electric motors & batteries in upcoming EVs (RWD / AWD / battery types)

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
I've made a very basic and confusing analysis of electric motors and batteries coming in the near future EVs (in the Future BMW Models Thread).

My rough analysis of NCAR/XNF motor and battery offerings for NAx and G65/G95 EVs. No specifications, just an attempt at making sense of what different models mean in terms of their hardware:
  • RWD (NAx only): there will be two motors offered: one for 20 models (currently this is NA0 only), the other for 40 models.
  • AWD: there will be three classes of motor combinations (sorry if this is confusing). The new iX3 50x is an example of something that we could call middle class. There will be another setup in the same class that will be used on most 40x models. Another class is possibly something less powerful (this one has the most confusing combination of applications, so let's leave it alone for the time being). And then there's the class that will be used on M cars. I mentioned before that M3, X3M/X4M, and X5M/X6M will all use the same motors; now, I can see that iX5 M70 will also use a similar setup, though with different characteristics.
  • Batteries: NA5 and NA7 will use two battery types: one that we can see on iX3 50x (will also be used in M60) and something smaller for 40 and 40x. NA0 and NA1 will use the same batteries for the same models, with the exception of 20 and 40 RWD that will have their own batteries, possibly with different chemistry. X3M, and X4M will use the same larger battery as the regular models but the battery used in M3 will be unique. G65/G66/G95/G96 will also use two battery sizes: the smaller one for 50x and the larger one for all other models. The cars made in China will have completely different batteries.

I'm pretty sure there will be questions. Please ask, I'll try to unpack it to the best of my abilities.

Thanks for the update!

On the batteries, does this mean NA0/NA1/NA5/NA7 50 xdrive and M60 and X3 M and X4 M a use a 109 kWh battery? Or am I misunderstanding something? I know BMW had previously mentioned different cell heights for sedan and SUV models.

And is the M3 battery then smaller to save weight or space or what would make it different that wouldn’t also apply to the X3 M? Chemistry?

On the motors, does the class refer to the number of motors or specs/output? You mention the 40/50 xdrives are similar and Ms and ix5 M70 are similar but where does that leave something like a NA0 or NA5 M60?

Does it also mean no RWD 50 models?

Hope that’s not too many questions.

Same battery ID.

Unknown. I can see battery specs only 4-6 months before sales start.

Output for sure. It remains to be seen how many motors will be on the M cars.

Those are in the 40/50 family.

At least at the moment.

Really interesting info.
The M3 getting a unique battery can mean many things, we have to wait on what BMW really plans for it. But i recon the battery might need to have a higher power output to feed all 4 motors at the same time over a longer timeframe?
Or they will try to make the battery more energydense (and therefore lighter) in exchange for a higher price point.

My guess would be a very similar battery for capacity but with increased cooling to allow it to operate without restriction for longer.

Any insights about BMW ongoing efforts to offer a solid state battery?

Yeah that’s my bet. M3 has track requirements that the X3 M is unlikely to need.

They are working on it, but it will take another few years until this is ready.
Not something to expect for the M3.

That’s what I also learned - “in progress”.

Who is manufacturing the batteries for BMW? And is BMW's battery supply chain sufficient to compete with Tesla / BYD volume?

Their new battery plant in Woodruff, SC is scheduled to open in 2026, though I don't know if there's a specific date yet.
