X7 has raise roof rail while x5 has flush rail. Not sure that make a difference. Also width maybe different. Oem bar has a inch or so of room for width adjustment, not too much. Need to try

The X7 and X5 have a different part number for the rack. The one for the X5 does fit some other BMWs, though.

Has anyone tried the newer Yakima competitor? They are similar to the OEM and Thule Wingbar Edge models, but they have adjustable pitch for the bar (3 positions). Wondering if that helps with noise, or if it’s just marketing. I’ve never seen them.

For anyone with an X5 and the Thule 53" crossbars with the 184023 fit kit, do you know what width the black plastic sliders are set to on your front and rear crossbars? When I originally bought my crossbars, they were for a Volvo and I don't know how much to adjust them in or out for the width of the X5.

Thanks!

Can anyone tell me how high the oem crossbars sit and how high the Thule bars sit?
I'm trying to determine if there is a significant height savings with the Thule to justify the additional cost.
TIA

I have oem and Thule windbar evo. The height difference is really just aesthetics when nothing is mounting. No practical difference. With box mount, the difference in height isn’t observable.

I would say the color makes more difference. If you have shadows rail, i think the black Thule will look better with nothing mounted. If you have silver rail, then oem (silver) will be ok.

Edit:

Asked wife to do simple measurements with both just sitting in garage floor. ( I only put them when needed)

Oem: top of bar floor, 3-3/4”. This should be equal to top of bar to top of rail, not to top of car’s roof

Thule windbar evo: top of bar to floor 3-1/2”. So about 1/4” lower.

Top of bar to car’s roof, + 1-1/4”. This is about how much the rails stick out from roof.

I think majorly of heigh reduction from Thule is actually the bar thickness, not the mount. Also my thule being black, when mounted in csr, it look lower profile. Oem mounts and bar is more of rectangular, while Thule is more trapezoidal, if that makes any sense.

One more comment, if you plane to take the bars on and off, then oem is much easier. No special tools are needed. You need a long hex screwdriver form thule.

Wow. So only a 1/4” difference. I was not expecting that.
Thank you. You saved me money!

FWIW, the OEM ones come with locks, while most of the others, locks are optional. With the OEM ones, you tighten it down, then the cover goes over that, and gets locked so you can't access it to loosen it.

Classify here or Facebook market place? Lots is G05 lease return, owners selling the cross bar between $150-$200. The low cost is the primary reason I am keeping oem instead of Thule. The Thule is sold to a friend at the same cost I bought for his 40i. He hasn’t come get it because winter is here yet. He will need it for ski season.

I've had mine for a while, but paid something like $200 delivered from an on-line BMW parts supplier (I think they were in NJ). That was a decent discount from the list price, and lots cheaper than Yakima or Thule.

Probably not crazy good... I got 15% off using the Costco Auto Program's Parts and Service discount from a local dealer.

I think before Covid oem is like 250 and many used trade around 150; after Covid the oem price increased to >350 and used market also goes up a bit

Yeah my dealer would go to $350 but that's it. Still half the price of the Thule/Yakima bars.

I checked all the posts on this thread and tried mounting on B and C pillars, but getting little bit of whistling (first picture). However, with music it is not noticeable. Have anyone revisited their preferred rack location on the rails?

Second picture is from GOLFFRR's video. He has no whistle issue, and I am noticing that his OEM rack (first rack) is mounted slightly after the B pillar. Could this be the ideal solution/location?

As many suggested I am going to try this: "open the trunk and then position the box as far back as possible that doesn't affect the trunk operating correctly and then set the bars to accommodate that position."

If nothing works then I'll try the tapping method on the bottom part of the rail (as a last resort), I'll report back, but also wondering if anyone found a good solution.
Hi there, I am trying to have the same setup .... besides the 7603 & 4023 kit, did you had to buy anything else?

Do I just need the fitting kit 4032, https://www.ebay.com/itm/12621547668...Bk9SR6zJt8qFYw

OR

Do I need this one with the foot pack: https://www.ebay.com/itm/14546567327...Bk9SR67Jt8qFYw

Instead going to eBay, why not check Thule site to make sure. Here is a quick look at the part number from Thule website official site.

It doesn’t look like they match the eBay parts

Hi, I couldn’t resolve the whistling issue when I was driving around with just the racks. Racks itself lookded nice and sturdy, but I couldn’t live with the whistling. Tried moving the racks in various positions, but nothing helped, ended up with selling the set. I’ll try the OEM oned when time permits.

Oem also has whistling. Noise level is about the same overall. My comparison Thule windbar evo vs oem. If I have to pick a quieter one, it is oem between these, mainly because evo has ends sticking out. But difference is very small. Or maybe Thule windbar edge will be slight better, which I don’t have experience with.

I personally would remove it after every trip the wind noise wouldn't bother me as much. I don't want to deck out $1000+ CDN and find out the result is the same as Aeroblade.
