Anyway, did you try enabling the trackpad? Maybe Fn+9 or something. That seems to be ASUS command. Since it is "onboard" it may bypass the faulty I/O bus (of course, it may not).

bimmette When you list "human interface devices", what do you see (or post a pic)? Maybe we can use the touchscreen to get the trackpad activated. I am thinking maybe it was inactive since you were using an external mouse.

I gave up at that point. It's been 3 hours and I need to eat lunch. I've re-started again and will try that in a few minutes.

If its any consolation, know that I recently went through two different hard drives in the span of about a week. I had this computer with a really frustrating keyboard layout / trackpad and got so frustrated one time I pounded the keyboard with my fist. Turns out, not such a good idea, hard drive died immediately as did the computer. That was hard drive #1.

My buddy put a new hard drive in there for me and a few days later, I forgot about how hard drive number #1 tragically departed this world and hammered the keyboard in anger yet again. That was hard drive #2.

At this point my buddy said he had a connection coming up with some laptops designed for falls / military uses and suggested that might be more my style.

Turns out, it is. It is a little more bulky, but so far, I have not destroyed it, though I'm also on my best behaviour with it too...almost.

you could, and I would laugh, although I'm not dry cleaning anyone's clothes in this thread. I thought that was the point?

how new is it? When I first got an ASUS, I thought it was badass. The specs were killer. Then the next day it crapped out. Changed out to an Acer. Much better.
