This seems pretty suspect IMO. All signs pointing to shortages getting worse, not better. BMW has repeatedly warned that shortages will go into 2023.

They are already shipping these touchless models incomplete to dealers, waiting for software. If they had touchscreens in a month, they’d have a better plan than going through the trouble of writing new software, giving out credits, and pissing off customers when parts were a month away. AFAIK, none of the other shortages/deletions have gotten better at all - I mean, they are shipping luxury cars w/ *MANUAL* seats - so I’m not going to hold my breath for this to be over so fast. I’d bet the rest of the ‘22 MY is the same.

As soon as I source a car for my wife I’ll be selling my Alpina B7 and will never own another BMW again. I emailed the CEO of BMW and maybe his office can rectify the situation otherwise I’m done!
My dealership was caught in lies many times about this situation just not wanting to help in any way so I finally told them I want them to solve it then. They decided to rebuttal with giving my car to someone on their waitlist and asking me if I wanted to submit another order at a later date and if I still wanted my M5 as well. That is a very short version but just too much. I have been patient beyond patient.
My car is waiting transportation, well someone else's car is. BMW, how do you treat your loyal customers like this and expect us to remain loyal. You can’t blame every mistake on SC. If this screen mistake happened 12 months ago you would have replaced them, not hide it behind global part shortages. Goodbye BMW! This has just been too much.
sorry for your frustration. I got inspired by your "emailing ceo" and I just sent one as well. maybe I got a bit too emotional/dramatic for second part lol:

Sorry, I am new here and not sure if I can post a new thread, so I just add here. I will be a first time owner of BMW, but I am not very happy about this non-touch screen and deletion of backup assistant.

Here are my understanding and questions,
1. The hardware of backup assistant is still there. The deletion of backup assistant was just because there is no way to choose backup spot on the non-touch screen. Is my understanding correct?
2. I think there be will aftermarket touchscreen available on eBay soon. One can probably do it with some youtube videos. The software update is just to disable the touchscreen. Since I am planning to swap the screen by myself, can I take the delivery without the software update?

Thanks much

Re: the touch screens, yeah. Drove my truck today and was much more aware of just how many times I finger-banged that thing driving across all of San Antonio (twice) bouncing back and forth between the navi, satellite radio, local radio, phone calls, etc. Same in my wife’s Jeep Grand Cherokee tonight.

I’m very well aware of the MMI interface (used it 10 years ago in our Audis, LOL), and the hand gesture control will likely help a lot too, but man, am I accustomed to a touch screen. Hell, I’m typing this on an iPad!

Hope they have this sorted by the time the car’s built…. Too beautiful, and promises to be too cool to have it spoiled by this stupid glitch.

No one is sure how to add back because BMW is not being forthcoming about it. My dealer received an email from bmw saying you can not swap them and it is impossible to retrofit, so who knows. After prying and getting mixed information it was not worth the risk, along with the poor treatment they gave me. If you buy you should be ok with not ha one touch screen, while it is likely someone will figure it out, no one knows what will be required and how long they will ship without. Sorry you are trying your first bmw now, you can replace me because unless corporate steps up to correct my bad experience for two flagship cars now cancelled I will never come back to bmw again.
Enjoy.

Well written and I agree with what you said.
I got a bounce back so will resend later. In Korea on business dealing with supply chain issues and new product development but will look when I get back to the hotel.
I can share from first hand experience, not all the issues are truly SC issues, everything is getting blamed on SC though and for this issue being pushed to the customer and bmw doesn’t care and it is evident!

So there is possibility that the touchscreen will come back soon?
OK, now I'm in a hard place:
1. My current car which is "Awaiting carrier" doesnot have a touch screen but does have hitch
2. I really need the hitch cause it will be our camping car
3. I really want a touchscreen
4. I called MB and was told it will take 5 months to custom build a GLE 450.
5. Should I give up my current car and wait?

I'm getting pissed off as I write this post....

You are in my same position, my car was assigned to a carrier and I got tired of the lies and contradictions from the dealer. Word has it that a few week 47 builds are in 150 status with it, if they add it back in 3 weeks and you truly can’t add it later, which is what I was told, good luck ever selling your car. If they would be forthcoming and be detailed about what was changed or missing we would know how to correct but all I kept getting told was it will never be possible.

We are thinking about pass this car and place another order when the touchscreen is back.
At least adding hitch is easier than adding touchscreen(if ever possible).

You know where I stand, I wouldnt take delivery of that car. If the rumors are true and it is a small window with no touch screen the car will be unsellable. For the amount you are paying you should get a simple option like touch screen. it is table stakes. How they treat you though should decide if you can justify staying with the brand. My experience has been too negative through and through.

No. You aren't choosing a parking spot to backup. You can select back up assistant via the iDrive controller (knock to right, scroll, push down).

your response is confusing in light of the touchscreen deletion. such a statement goes against BMW deleting Backup Assistant currently. it's like you're telling folks not to worry about losing the touchscreen since it's accessible via iDrive controller as portrayed in vehicles with a touchscreen (which isn't applicable to them).

A good company that cares about their customers will always respond to their customers complaints. Communications can make or break a situation and I certainly hope they make up for it! If I were in the same situation as you I would have no problem walking away as well. I’ll find out probably next weekend when my car arrives, I’ll be on the phone with my SA first to find out if there are any missing features. If it’s missing features without a clear explanation of whether those features can be added back in the future plus a fair adjustment, I would not even go in and just walk away. Good luck and keep us updated.

So I got hit with the no touchscreen but really doesn't bother me. My CA is saying since the update is coming on the 11th I'll be able to pick it up on the 11th. Since he didn't know about the deletion until I told him my faith in what he says is pretty low. Does anybody know if we can, in fact, pick it up on the 11th?

I'm in this situation too. My build has hitch and is exactly as I want - Minus the Touch Delete. IF (big IF) I knew Touchscreen was heading back AND Hitch option (I'd also love to wait for HK sound), I'd prob give up my build and reorder. BUT there are NO guarantees and, while an aftermarket hitch is readily avail (like Stealth), its perhaps still not as good and 3x the cost. It's a dilemma. IF I were getting more credit back (the 500 is pretty lousy solution) or a retrofit solution was factual, I'd move forward since I don't have touch on my current vehicle. Then there is the what do you do between now and the new build? I reached out to two other dealers who stated an order today would delivery near April or so.

Unlike you, though, I would not go to MB as it's not comparable IMO.

Any feedback on the screen as I believe you both were taking delivery this weekend?

Welcome to the forum.

1. No, that is not correct, you can use the controller to select the backup assistant.

2. There is no way to take delivery without the software update since there is a stop sale on them until the update is performed. You would also have to skip every update in the future since the vehicle is coded to not have a touchscreen.

Just spoke with BMW Genious, looks like my X5 40i got impacted by touch screen and backup assist delete. But on BMW my garage it still doesn't show any line item regarding this deletion.

Few things here from my conversation with Genius rep:
(I didn't check on the other variants as mine is 40i, so i only asked about that variant)

1) All xDrive 40i's are impacted from mid last month and in to the foreseeable future. They don't know when they will be able to offer the touch screen again as of now.

2) Screen is not touch capable(hardware) as everyone is saying. Looks like they are making the screens like this due to some part shortages.

3) All cars regardless of touch capable or not will get the future software updates. (I was more worried about this).

Mine is still on track to be build complete by sometime next week. Sadly i have to take it, this is my first ever BMW. I have used Mazda infotainment system using control knob in the past, i think i can live without touch screen. But disappointed about the backup assist removal though, i was planning to use it as we have a tight garage space.
