Extended warranties are a waste until you break transfer case, trans, engine turbo or any of the crazy electrical items in a bmw. Having an M50i I got one through my finance company and for me it’s a piece of mind for me to drive the way I want and not have to worry. Pays for break down, tow, lodging, loaner car etc.

I would not own a german car made within the last 10 years WITHOUT a warranty.. spend the extra maybe $3,000 for the piece of mind.. these cars are so technologically advanced that even a headlight costs thousands to repair. I know when a family member bought a used Audi they got a warranty and got reimbursed when they traded in the car for the amount/time not used.

I dont know X5’s at all. The tech they have is mid boggling and it scares me like that 2 way tailgate… what do you think??

Thanks

My first claim on my $5k platinum warranty was denied. Dealer said he’s never seen a seat pad sensor denied. My passenger restraint system malfunction light and seatbelt warning chime was constant. Cancelled the TWS Platinum Contract and have $5k coming back to me.

On the seat-looked into when it happens and how it works. It’s a rebound issue. I hand adjusted the supporting bolsters and seat two weeks ago and have not had it chime or warn of any system issues for nearly a week now. I couldn’t go two hours previously. Not certain I needed a new sensor pad per the dealer but time will tell.

This pricing tella you everything you need to know about expected long-term repair costs on an X5. The underwriters set premiums at a level somewhat above expected average repair costs over the term of the policy. These figures are the highest I've ever seen on car that's still in its original warranty period. Last year I extended my 2023 X5 45e out to 84 months / 75k miles for $4995, which was the most I've ever paid on a warranty.

For comparison, we just bought a Mazda CX-5 as a third car, and extended the warranty (Mazda OEM platinum, exclusionary policy) out to 10 years / 100k miles from original in service date. It cost $1900. Last year we extended my wife's new MDX Type S out to 8 years, 100k miles. That was $1880. My Mom's 2022 Subaru Crosstrek was $1650 out to 10/100. Yes, the MSRP on the BMW is about 2x the Mazda, but it's only 20% more than the Acura.

This tells you the underwriters expect X5's to have costly failures. The question then is do you want to hedge your risk with a warranty or self-insure and roll the dice.

Or they are priced higher due to the "belief" many have that BMW's are prone to have reliability issues and those who buy them don't feel the price of the extended warranty is outrageous.

Current warranty status does not factor into extended warranty pricing from Fidelity. Your 84 months / 75K miles are probably from your inservice date. Fidelity's coverage is strictly additional, taking OP's coverage on a 2020 with 34K miles to 2032 or 95K miles on the vehicle.

Also, cost of coverage would have been even cheaper in 2024 prior to the 2025 rate adjustment.

Exactly, give me an Audi A4, Mercedes-Benz C300, or a BMW 330i... the BMW's coverage is going to be the most expensive... sorry.

One thing for sure....Extended Warranties are a very personal decision. While we can all voice our opinions about our own experiences....at the end of the day is what you, personally feel comfortable. No other way of slicing this one...
