Most if not all evse at that price point ($500ish) will have the time window feature and many more. Just the oem bmw one does not. I don’t know why anyone would by the bmw wall is except just paying the badge.

Tesla wall charge will work just fine. You will need a J3400(NACS) to J1772 adaptor. I don’t believe tesla wall charger include one. It is a $100-150 item. If you don’t have a tesla, why not just buy a mainstream one from say charge point, emporia, Wallbox pulsar ….. just too many options. Most full featured smart evse can be had for under $500.

Thanks, that's really good info to know. The Tesla one is $480 shipped and came up recommended for my car, and specifically says "complete with a 7.3M Type 2 charging cable attached, meaning it can operate universally with any electric vehicle."
I think the Gen 3 was specifically released to be used with other EVs so I figure I wont need any adapters but I'll update when it arrives. I did look at a few other models but by the cable lengths tend to be 5m or 6m which is too short, or 10m on unteathered which end up costing more.

Oh I just realized you are in Australia, the plug commment doesn’t apply to your location. 😅

For length is the cable, US has code to limit the length to 25ft/7.6 meters. Nothing from factory csn be longer. Not sure what is the rule in Australia.

Any Tesla (NACS) to J1772 adapter recommendations for the X5? I have a gen 3 Tesla wall charger at home, ordered an X5 50e and looking to see if anyone has any recs for the adapter. I have seen a few (Lectron, Tesla Tap Mini, A2Z) but all seem to have at least some issues. Thanks.

Depending on where in the world you are, BMW and many others, use potentially different sockets for charging. There are at least 3 that I know of.

In the USA, to use a Tesla wall box on a BMW, you need an adapter plug to fit the J1772 socket it requires versus the NAS(?) plug used to charge a Tesla.

And, don’t try to use a Tesla Supercharger on your X5.

My X5 has a J1772 socket, purchased this adapter—works great, no issues.

Yep, pretty sure we are a direct fit between Tesla and BMW plugs. Only different part is the two pins for supercharging with the Tesla but the BMW have obviously no receiver for these. I say all this without receiving my 50e due for delivery to me in 2 weeks... but pretty sure

BMW, along with a bunch of other manufacturers, have indicated that they will start to use the NAS plug starting, I think ,next year. My guess is that it may be restricted to BEVs but maybe not…I haven’t seen anything definitive on what models will get it. Still, that socket isn’t used internationally.
