As a comparison, I purchased a ChargePoint Home Flex, Level 2 up to 50 Amps. $750
Electrician to put a 50-amp double switch in one of my panels, run a wire around 50 feet using a direct connect to the CP. $750 I didn’t know before that the included charger line with my new 50e could be a level 2, (with whatever the cost of the of that was) but, to me, it wouldn’t have mattered. So, $1500 total… |

Im debating now to get either the BMW Level 2 charger or the Chargepoint Home Flex... Can either one charge 2 cars in the future and distribute the power between both?

you don’t necessarily need load-sharing, but it adds safety to the system. some have purchased an adapter to plug two EVs into one circuit (for example, NeoCharge). AFAIK, this device doesn’t allow simultaneous charging, but sequential, meaning after one vehicle is done charging, the logic will switch the active outlet and charge the other vehicle. the problem with such a device is that it doesn't know the max amps allowed on the circuit and won't manage any current. JuiceBox can. here’s my setup: Last edited by nZtiZia; 05-22-2023 at 12:58 PM.. |

Most People Don't Need 220
I've had my 45E for about 15 months and wanted to see if I really needed to upgrade to 220. I drive about 30 miles a day mostly. I was frustrated with the 110 charger that came with the car as it took over 20 hours to fully charge. After discussions with my BMW dealer I upgraded to a portable 110/220 charger. They told me the charge time at 110 was 50% faster than the original. IT WAS TRUE. It is always fully charged in the morning. By the way I am averaging on electric over about 35MPG. The 45E is the best vehicle I have ever owned.

correct, when I said wall box, I don't mean BMW wallbox model EVSE. I means this Wallbox brand

fuel fill-up intervals are highly variable among PHEV users. for me, i drive <30 miles/day, so i can go months. my longest was 7 months. on my current cycle, i last filled up in Dec 2022 with 30% fuel still left in my tank Last edited by nZtiZia; 04-28-2023 at 04:45 PM.. |

All EVSEs have a control output called the pilot signal that tells the vehicle the maximum current they can supply. Then, it is up to the vehicle to never pull more than that. Since the power supply is IN the vehicle, just like plugging in a lamp, it pulls what it wants to, but in this case, it's a bit smarter, since it will abide by the pilot signal sent to it to never exceed that value. This allows the vehicle to operate with an EVSE that might not be able to max out the vehicle's capacity...i.e., say it can only supply 10A, the vehicle, even though it COULD use more, will limit its draw to that 10A. |

From the look of it, the cable between the EVSE and J1772 is a lot beefier than what we got in 45e. Ours has yellow and skinny cable for this section. The cable between the wall plug and EVSE, ours isn't detachable, so it force us to use 110V 15A plug.
I like the idea of this EVSE that can support both 110V and 220V, but the 14-50 adaptor cable is just too expansive IMO. Someone mentioned $230? Hopefully we get to see after market support.

People getting a more expansive EVSE mainly for additional feature above basic charging capabilities, such as user selectable current limit, schedule charging, share charging, logging .... Not everything is important to everyone. Myself started with Juicebox for the first two features listed

Not everyone has a lot of space or power available in their panel...while the new X5 can only pull a max of 32A, the flexible multi-charger can supply 40A, which means that it SHOULD be supplied with 50A to prevent potential overloading of the wiring should you plug a friend's vehicle in while visiting that can use more than your X5 currently can. While, because your X5 won't overload a 40A circuit, it should be wired with a 50A one, which adds to the installation costs.
