Sure. The i4 has a rather traditional look. Except for it having no exhaust it could be a modern ICE car by the looks of it. (It actually is since it's based on the ICE 4-series and not a completely separate BEV platform like the iX.) On the other hand the iX looks very different and non-traditional. Sure it's likely slightly more efficient but I won't sacrifice the looks for a tiny increase in efficiency especially since the i4 is one of the most efficient BEV in its class despite not looking like a spaceship so it IS possible. Even the interior of the iX is just super weird. It sort of looks like a mixture between an 80's-inspired retro interior and a concept car. Why? Why would you combine wood trim with crystals and have those weird fabric/leather choices for the seats? It's just odd.

I don't know why BMW & Mercedes are trying SO hard to differentiate their pure BEV platforms from their ICE counterparts. Only when they have a shared platform like the i4, i5 or i7 it seems they are able to produce a BEV that doesn't look like a plastic-spaceship. (Although the i7 isn't my favourite either ...) So that gives me hope for the looks of the iX5 since that one will still share its platform with the ICE models and won't be based on the pure BEV "Neue Klasse"-platform yet.
haha great explanation but a simple “looks like a traditional car” would’ve been enough, because I completely agree with you! on a FB thread that gave first glimpse at Neue Klasse i I mentioned that these outrageous EV designs look like what I did back in the 80s when I was drawing “futuristic” cars lol

TBH i wouldn't be surprised if the bulk of current designers are Gen X who are now in a position to see their childhood 'designs' come to life

It definitely will not be Neue Klasse and will be CLAR based. The ICE, Hybrid and BEV will share the same hardware.

Exactly this was the reason for my decision. Once we reach 500 miles range and significantly increase the charging network outside metropolitan areas, I am in.

Exactly. My life with Tesla for 3 years, below 40 degrees rapid battery loss when traveling and lack of convenient charging stations, major anxiety. And rolling in with 3 miles to spare between charges on many occasions.

I distinctly remember a video showing a Tesla owner being towed just 100 meters to the charging station

I was confirming it so you can stop hoping and know it will not be Neue Klasse and it will be CLAR.

Edit: Upon rereading your words you are correct. Your hope is in the looks and not the platform. My bad. And I'm the one whose native language is English.

LOL.
Google "EV horror stories". 13,600,000 results.
Let's face it, EVs are fine and dandy for local use when home charging is available but can really be a disaster out on the road doing distance travel with cold weather compounding these problems.
ICE and PHEVs will be a major part of our transportation equation for decades to come.

Well, here it is..

Both events:
- "Battery charging" and
- "Efficient coasting (Engine off)"
happens automatically. Doesn't matter if you are up or downhill.

Even for smallest distances of meters, you can see the IDrive trying to optimize all resources to increase efficiency.

Hope that it helps

50e has been charging since last night and went for a drive at 3pm when it was nice and hot out. It reads 48 miles on the charge!!!! Just wanted to share that because I love seeing it! Took my kid to karate and back and still shows 45 miles left. Love it.

Anyone know how the electric range is calculated? I use to be getting 47/48 on average, a few times 52, lately 43.

It's getting colder...heating is less efficient than cooling, plus there are more things that get heated: seats, rear window, mirrors, steering wheel in addition to the cabin air.

The estimate is based on the previous 18-miles of use and is a moving average that assumes your next driving will be under the same exact conditions as those previous 18-miles (30Km). That almost never happens, so it is an estimate, just as the range to empty of the ICE's fuel tank...go from a long road trip on the interstate to stop and go around town, and that range to empty will quickly plummet, too.

Yes, during the summer i was regularly getting a theoretical 53 miles of range on full charge ! Now, in the fall and the cooler temps, down to 44 miles !

You can minimize range 'loss' by preconditioning while plugged in, but it won't be the same as a typical summer (where preconditioning also helps when parked in a hot garage while plugged in).

Worst case is multiple short hops where it cools back to ambient each time you stop.

Real world range

Here are two recent real world range tests.

Both of them had the gas engine turned on accidently (BMW nav, double drive button put it into sport), for about 10 seconds. Hence the 0.2L on the dash.

Both of them said about 59 kms after full charge. I achieved almost near the BMW rated max (64km).

Both of these days it was hovering around 8-10c with sun. So the HVAC was barely functioning other than the mornings.

60-70% highway.

I drove normal, didn't granny. Just my normal style.

Just ordered an X5 50e two days ago. Will be MY2025 build and just got the options that my wife uses, she hates Auto Pilot and HUD, I love them both on my 2023 I4 but she doesn’t. The 40mile rage makes a tone of sense for us because she has free chargers at work and we can charge at home and have solar panels. We love everything about the new X5 except for two things, coming off a 2021 Genesis GV80 that we looove! (But the GV80 has no Plug in options and has gone up in price for the same SUV)

One is that the back seat does not recline, this is something we love on the GV80 specially my son. Second, even though the 40+ miles works well for the job commute I wish it had the capability to charge with a type 3 charger like my i4 does for longer trips. Makes a huge difference to be able to charge in 10mins or less rather than hours. This would make the X5 50e perfect. Getting delivery in 3-4 months (hopefully)

Welcome to the forum and congratulations on your order request. Just for clarity so people aren't confused. It is not possible to order a MY25 50e at this time. Once the order bank opens for My25 then they will enter the information for your order. They may have entered it as a MY24 just to have it in the system but things may change if different options and features are offered.

I would highly recommend you add both the HUD and DAP to your build. She doesn't have to use them but likely will once she has them.

Nice to know, thanks for the info and thanks for the welcome. I believe thats what the sales guy said, very likely will change to MY25 because I just put in the order. I think I’ll wait to see if there is any changes to the options packages and maybe add the HUD, as for the DAP she is scared of it and I dont see spending $2,100 for it if it will mever be used, I did upgrade to the 21in wheels which look great and the running boards. If the option pkgs change on the MY25 and makes more sense might consider. I love the HUD in my i4 she turns it off 🤷*♂️ when she drives it.

Another vote to get DAP. I think you will not regret it and it will help on the resale.

Without DAP you don’t have e.g. Adaptive Cruise Control.
My 2016 Outback and any rental car I had the last 8 years had it. You really want to buy a luxury car and not have Adaptive Cruise Control?
It even has stop and go and in a traffic jam it’s a blessing.

In addition I was hesitant with the hands free option and it took me a little to trust it. It exceeded my expectations and now I use it on a regular basis.

People here can only give you good advice.

At the end you need to decide.
