OP sorry to steal your thread, i am wondering if someone would be interested in this upgrade, i spent 3 months getting the brackets for these calipers ready. These kits work with f90 rotors, and come with powerstop low dust no noise pads. Figured id ask on here , i made a thread with 0 views. Again OP sorry to steal your post for a second

Curious about the remarks here about the X5M brakes and the full MSport brakes on the G05. I have both ('21 X5M and '22 G05 MSport 40i with red caliper Msport brakes) and while they may look the same, the real M brakes are sooo much better on initial bite, dissipation of heat and prevention of fade. I have to be careful when I hop back and forth in these because braking distance is sooo much further in the G05 Msport, and they will fade very quickly. The real M brakes are insane and you can slam/threshold brake over and over and over and they will not fade, but your brain might fade from the G's and your eyeballs may pop out of their sockets.
Try that on the G05 Msport brakes and you will think the pads are made of chocolate. The Msport brakes seem to be for looks only and I would never drive them aggressively for any period of time. So for anyone contemplating the upgrade for the G05, I can assure you the performance improvement is massive.

Bolt on fitment. The only thing being that the disc retaining screw hole does not line up with the hole on the non-M hub. Wouldn’t be an issue when bolted down though! |

After reading this thread it seemed like this would be an awesome upgrade for my X5. But after further investigation, I've determined that there is an additional difference between the X5M and non-M G05, that swayed me away from this alternative.
The hub on the M vehicles have steel studs (3 in the case of the X5M) protruding from the hub face. The non-M G05 does not have these. Presumably, the M models have these because of greater braking forces, and the engineers must have determined that they were necessary. So on the non-M G05 the disk stays in place through clamping force and 5 lug bolts, whereas the X5M additionally has three steel studs. I posted this to add information to the thread for those contemplating this mod. |

For example, I am running 400mm M brakes on a F31 without the dowels on the hubs and never once had any problem. There are high power M-lite cars, such as M760i, X5 M50i etc running big power on heavy cars that use hubs without the dowels. |

Also, as a side note.
I have previously posted that the F95 X5M fronts are bolt on fitment to pretty much all G series models. I have now also verified that the 380mm rear set up of F95 X5M is bolt on to G2x rear hubs. |

I agree that there probably isn't any issue as it would be very surprising to see five lug bolts shear because of the missing dowels. My X5 has the X-line brakes and I was looking at the M Performance BBK (34-11-2-458-883), which has the 395 rotors. From what I can tell, the calipers are larger and have larger pistons as well. But the X5M retrofit is another option, but only if it costs less in the end. We'll see. |

It occurred to me that the front rotors on the M Performance BBK are the same size as the X5M rotors being used on these conversions. Other than the M Performance rotors being single-piece (and heavier because of that), can anyone think a reason why pairing them with the X5M calipers and pads would be a bad idea?

I know you mentioned that your car does not have the M Sport brakes, but as you have posted the calipers and disc sizes are identical between M Sport and M Perf. I have blank 395mm rotors here and I am happy to take photos and show you those mounted with F95 6 piston calipers. There would be no issue with using that combo and you would have the set screw line up without any issue that way. If you wanted you could even go with the M Perf 395mm dimpled and slotted rotors. |

Is there any way you could measure the weight of these 395 blank rotors ? I am curious to compare the weight of an x5m rotor vs a blank disk. Thanks

I was starting to source parts for this upgrade but found out that the M Performance brake kit requires coding. If you already had the Sport brakes, there should be no coding required. But because I have the tiny basic brakes, I would need coding and doubt any dealer would code my car with the X5M brakes on there. And with the LCI having closed the door to coding, it's not something I can get someone outside a dealership to do. Quite sad, indeed.

Just posting some info on rotor sizes between various configurations (pulled from AIR with valid VINs).
Basic LCI brakes have 348X36 front and 345X24 rear discs. M Sport brakes have 374X36 front and 345X24 rear discs. M Performance brakes have 395X36 front and 398X28 rear discs (dimpled). M60i Sport brakes have 395X36 front and 370X24 rear discs. X5M brakes have 395X36 front and 380X24 rear discs (drilled). Discs on all but the X5M are fixed bimetal, while the X5M has a floating-type disc. |

EDIT: upon further investigation, this appears to be an LCI thing. It would appear that BMW have possibly downgraded the LCI to only use 374mm on certain engine variants (when optioned with the M Sport brakes), whereas pre-LCI got 395mm regardless of engine variation. Even the 25d (in pre-LCI form) got 395mm! Interesting find! Last edited by blau3er; 03-06-2024 at 05:02 PM.. |
