Just carried out an oil change on my M50I and thought i would update the thread.
My car had the later type oil filter housing with a drain off cap in it. This mean that the fluted type oil filter removers don't work as the drain cap sits too deep. Instead it requires a 36mm socket to undo the filter. The drain cap in the filter housing uses a T55 torx bit to undo it. The tightening torque for refitting this is 5-7nm. The included O ring in the oem filter isnt the right size to repace the O-ring on the drain so i just left the O-ring on (it will get changed when BMW do the next oil change). The only other thing to note is the main sump drain plug is supposed to be tighted to 40nm, mine was tightened much tighter than this by BMW the last time they serviced the car. So much so that the T50 torx felt like it might even round off the sump plug or pull the threads out. When looking at the plug when it was out it can use either a T50 torx or an 8MM allen key/bit. The 8MM option is a much nicer fit and is definately the preffered fit over the T50 bit. Hope that helps someone as I found this thread useful. |

Using 0w40 over 0w30 does not help with wear at startup.
When cold, both are 0w, so no difference. The difference is when it's at operating temp. I would not vary from the manufacturer spec. Lots of internal systems rely on specific oil flow rates and pressures, and it may not be smart to change that, unless you're the engineer that designed it. |

Im on 5w_40 RUP Ravenol. It is for the Engine much more better. He need to do this whit this oil because if minimalism friction, so they have less CO2 and less consumption but for the Motor is this not better., |
