Just took my first road trip in my X5 xDrive 50e: Fredericksburg VA to Charlotte NC and back—350 miles each way, 700 miles round trip. I drove 5 mph above the speed limit using the cruise control. My speed was 70-75 the majority of the trip. I started with a fully charged battery and drove in hybrid eco pro mode using the BMW navigation. On the first tank, with a full battery, I averaged 31.5 MPG and drove about 465 miles and refueled with about 80 miles of range remaining. I could have gone more than 530 miles on the first tank. On the second tank, the battery was depleted, and I averaged 26.7 MPG over the last 196 miles (trip computer on the app resets with each stop). So once the PHEV battery is “depleted” on the 50e, based on my experience you can expect to get 26-27 MPG on the interstate at 70-75 MPH.

Taking my X5 (2021 45e) long road trip (500 miles)
is it okay to just drive the car all the way in Hybird or Hybird ECO? or should I just do Battery Control 50% all the way? Thank you |

if you want to preserve battery charge, then Battery Control. using Hybrid/Hybrid Eco Pro will use almost all of your battery. the use of preconditioning is my main determinant of whether or not i need to preserve battery charge

or would you just set it at 30% battery hold all the way 500 miles Everytime I engaged in battery hold, the car is very loud. Had my car died out on me eariler this year because was driving too much on eletric. they replaced the 12v battery. |

why would any of the drive modes be “bad”? they each have their efficiencies (and inefficiencies). you’ll just need to play with each to see which one gives you the results you’re looking for. for me: Hybrid/Adaptive/Sport 26-28mpg Hybrid Eco Pro 30-33mpg Battery Control 24-26mpg Last edited by nZtiZia; 12-04-2024 at 11:34 AM.. |

Two thoughts on here:
1. My last car was a 2015 X5 35d. We ran it until ~150k mikes at which point she started to get tired. We do a lot of long distance trips and was worried about reliability, otherwise I would have kept her until she fell apart ... best car I ever owned. 2. New car is a 2025 X5 50e ... we picked it up a few weeks ago; I hope we dont get a dreaded yellow wrench light as I would love to keep this car as long as the last ... but i realize there are a lot of complex systems in it. So far its amazing but i love to have cars ~10 years and put on ~150k miles on them. Can the 50e do it .... who knows .... |

Almost all modern vehicles are loaded up with electronics...while they are pretty stable long-term, that's always an issue and if you keep your vehicle long enough, finding a replacement part may also be an issue, as manufacturers are not required to keep spare parts on hand forever. Luckily, some parts are used for longer times, so the odds of finding one can be higher.
While keeping a vehicle 10+ years can work out, personally, I've usually found something I want sooner, or the vehicle has started to piss me off, so I change, but 8-years or so is the longest I've owned one vehicle. I changed the last two not because they were giving me problems, but because I decided I wanted something new. For some, the biggest worry on a vehicle with lithium ion batteries is their age, and how they tend to degrade over time with the increased number of recharge cycles it accumulates. While that's a true issue, the life is often much longer than people realize. Plus, with the PHEV, you've always got the ICE to back you up, so not as big of a deal. Who knows what the state of batteries and ICE will be in 10+years. SS batteries will start to show up in vehicles next year and there are ohter categories of batteries that show some promise for both energy density and longevity. After a while, there may be some aftermarket solutions for battery replacements that will give you faster charging, longer range, and longer life that actually cost less...we don't know for sure. With that in mind, the viability of keeping any vehicle these days for 10+ years may be suspect. I don't put many miles on mine anymore, but after more than 4-years with my 45e, I've not had an issue...expecting the same for many years yet, as it's nowhere near worn out yet. Could change tomorrow, but I'm not expecting it. |

Never took the x5 45e more than 60km/trip. this is will first time. Planning to just drive it on hybrid only. even when eletric hits 0% should be fine right? 500 miles road trip. Planning to do battery control when I'm closer to the densitation put it back at 30% at least. Would that be okay? |

I generally just set the battery control to 30% so if/when I stop, I can keep the cabin comfortable if someone doesn't want to get out at a rest stop, or while refueling. The hassle is, it needs to be turned back on each time you restart the vehicle. Bringing the battery back up is less efficient on a long trip versus just leaving it at 30% as the engine has to work not only to move the vehicle, but recharge the battery. Doing it while driving and limiting to 30% means it's just playing normal hybrid mode all of the time. If the trip included some low-speed, stop and go city, I might have it save more battery capacity for it, as it's much more efficient with more battery, and possibly plain EV mode there. Outside of the US, there are zones in cities where it is much more important to save battery capacity for things like city centers, or you end up paying a fairly stiff fee for using your ICE there.
My longest trip in my 45e was from New Hampshire to western Michigan and back. |

New Member First Question. Hope this is the right place to ask but I did see some trip data on this thread.
I finally talked myself out of the RX450H+ and I’m about to push the button on a 2025 X5 50e.I would like to know if in the trip data screen if there is a trip time or time since pushing the on button display along with the distance traveled? One of the things that really bugged me in my Honda was the lack of trip time. My old Subaru kept track of how long you had been driving and even told you when you had been driving 2 hours. Thanks, Chris |
