It's possible that there are changes in MY2021 or in recent software that have an effect. Or the comparative test environment is unlike most others (it may be a difference in engine or environment temperatures, or I'll note that sound improvement is more pronounced when starting and driving in Sport+ mode). A little humility is in order ...
I can vouch for Abhi_b on this, It doesn't sound louder for MY2021 cars. MY2021 is in fact quieter then previous model years so if you have a MY2021 don't waste your time or money doing this.

My 2020 is noticeably lounder with the flap open.
But you might be right about 2021 cars. They tinkered around with these cars so much there is no telling what changed.
I actually don't do it so much for the sound but more for seeing exhaust coming out both tips vs one side only LOL

It has a lot to do with the BS Mild hybrid system

Ok, that's interesting (that MY2021 exhaust behaves quieter even with flap open than previous MYs). How about further experiments to fully qualify? With flap open, what if you start and drive in Sport+ mode? Any difference if car is cold versus already warm? Any difference dependent on ambient temperature?

By the way, it's not that I don't believe the reports. What I don't like is the immediate jump to conclusion and blanket advice for everyone to give up. If it has been fully qualified, then that may be good advice, but the posts so far are shallow on the experimental results.

There's no experimenting needed, I've owned the car for 6 months and have tried it all.

Also I can assure you the car sounds quieter then this and doesn't make the same brap sound between shifts.

Reviving this thread...

Did a straight pipe in place of my resonator on my 2022 M50i. Then I learned the flaps are always closed lower than a certain RPM. I ordered a bluetooth OBD2 scanner that I'll pair with bimmerlink.

My question is...once I open the flaps using bimmerlink and pull the fuse the flaps stay open permanently? I can pull the scanner and put it away?

Also, when the fuse is put back in will valves revert to auto or I will have to connect obd2?

Bringing this back…

Has anyone tried this method with the F95? I’ve tried searching the forums but couldn’t come up with anything.

Is the fuse location the same across all X5 models?

can this be done on the 2019 X5 xDrive50i? I opened the flap today via BimmerLink app, and i heard it open, but I do NOT hear much of a difference. What am I missing?

Open the valve then disconnect cable. The valve will remain open permanently.

Just completed the mod on my ‘23 40i. Wait for the revs at the end. Not bad!

Just in case anyone else searches like I did, and did not get a clear statement ...

2023 x5 4.0, when turned off, valve is OPEN, thus pulling fuse keeps it open, sound is "better" when starting and in certain situations, but not annoying. Will keep it open.

No trouble at all. We don't have emissions guy running around to take readings.

Couldn't one put the car on sport plus to open the flap, then pull the plug, so as to not require an OBD2 tool?

I might be missing something here but why wouldn't you just always run the car in sport mode vs unplugging anything?

It’s so you can have a louder exhaust note in comfort mode vs always having to drive it in sport mode.

I ended up removing the device that operates the flap and zip tying the flap in the open position.

does this make a difference in a 2022 40i? or does that fall under the MY21 updates? also, any difference between pulling the fuse and pulling the cable under the car?
