Harmon Kardon option discontinued for a while

Heard tonight that BMW issued a bulletin that the HK option will no longer be offered on the X5 or X6 due to parts issues. Must be the chip shortage that everyone is facing.

I have an X5 in production with HK, I wonder if this impacts people like me. Would be disappointed if the build changed without my knowledge.

Well, just ordered last week. Hope they honor what I ordered. I'll settle for s B&W though.

Well, that’s interesting. There was a post in this thread that someone called a Genius who said it was standard now (see the quote in post #3), but the original post that was quoted looks to be gone, so I’m wondering if that was true.

https://g05.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1801958

The mention of the HK system in the Premium and Executive packages has been gone from the build your own section of the BMW website for about a week, but when I checked the prices a day or two ago, they hadn’t changed. Hopefully BMW had a little heads up that this was coming and only took orders for HK audio packages that they thought they could fill and then dropped the option for any ordered after a certain date. That way, if you you got your order already confirmed and accepted with the HK system, hopefully you’ll get it.

As far as being a downgrade, irrespective of the differences in audio quality between the HK system and the base audio, it’s a definite downgrade if you’re paying the same price for the package that no longer has the HK.

Looks like HK isn't standard issue per the website. Seems like it has been dropped.

So B&W was removed for all of 2021, along with acoustic glass, alcantara headliner (on x40i), and rear seat entertainment, and now even HK is gone?!

I've been cross shopping a GLE and that car is still offering acoustic glass, upgraded sounded system, and upgraded headliner.

I've really been wanting to order an X5 now but don't want to regret not having a couple of goodies that were on the 2020 and might be on a 2022.

Geez....BMW get your act together!

Not to mention soft close doors and heated/cooled cup holders

In what universe is it OK to do this and keep the price the same? I ordered my car last week assuming the packages are what I always thought they were. WTF BMW. Audio quality is a big deal to me. 70 K plus for a car and no way to order a decent radio in it.

I started this thread with what I heard tonight from a bulletin a dealer had. No disagreement that this is a deal killer for many. Google chip shortages and you will see that many car companies are scrambling right now. Cutting production and all kinds of stuff.

No excuse for what BMW is doing, but everyone is paying the price for just in time manufacturing. This will most likely get worse before it gets better.

Initially I was pretty burnt about this too and considered waiting until the 2022 build came out. I decided in the end that I probably wasn't going to use the heated/cooled cup holders anyway and I could live without the soft closing doors. The dealer offered to waive the shipping fee and I didn't feel like paying an additional $500 for the next build cycle so I put in an order!

For reference, the temperature control cup holders + soft closing doors were part of the ZPX Executive package which cost $5600 for the 2020 model.

The 2021 ZPX Executive package cost $5100 without it.

Additional differences between the two (For easy reference for those who are interested):

2020 had Sirius Sat Radio 1 year subscription
2020 had driver recorder as a part of the ZPX package. This option was moved to the ZPK package for 2021. (2020 ZPK package is $700 and 2021 ZPK package is $800)
2020 had active parking distance control as a part of the ZPX package. This option was moved to the ZPK package for 2021
2020 had surround view as part of the ZPX package. This option was moved to the ZPK package for 2021.

2021 added glass controls to the ZPX package which was a $650 option for the 2020
2021 added Harman Kardon surround system to the ZPX which was a $875 option for the 2020

But in the end you're right. If they're going to remove HK surround sound from the ZPX package then it should reflect in price. The current ZPX package valued at $5100 should be reduced to $4225. Me personally.... I wouldn't buy one without HK or better. I'd wait or move on. I noticed on my original 40i purchase order that HK was not included. It was one of the reasons I cancelled and put in an order for a M50i with B&W.

For those of you who are worried that you won't get HK. I wouldn't worry if its in your product build list. It would suck but you could always refuse the vehicle after inspecting it. With that being said, probably not a bad idea to contact your dealer to confirm in advance.

Yet the Executive package costs the same...Funny thing is if you select the package, the interior picture shows the HK on the speakers. But, if you click on the picture, it gets stuck trying to load the 360 view.

I just contact my dealer (Belgium) as my car is about to go into production.

He was not aware of any cancellation of the option (but ok, that can still come).

He checked the status of my car and is is 112 (to production). It's planned for March 10th 2021.
The option is still on the list and in the cars planning..

Will keep you posted when I would get some news of a cancellation.

I already gave a heads-up that I would not accept this cancellation from BMW's side without some options being discussed (later production date of 'free upgrade' to B&O)

This is true. They didn't fully hang us out to dry.

I'm just a bit miffed about the soft close doors. I had them on my F10 and I still haven't gotten used to just letting the door go and the soft close pulling it in.

That said, I'm really happy mine came in 2 weeks before these deeper cuts

Does anyone recall how much the HK upgrade was when it was a standalone option in previous Model years?

new Order

Last week thursday i put in an order for an x5 fully loaded... Got a text today saying that they wanted to downgrade to the base system leaving everything as it is. Doesn't sound like they will honor what I ordered.
