X5/X7 Tires Interchangeable?

I have a 2019 M-Sport X5 40i and a 2021 x7 M50i with nearly identical tire specs, except for the middle value. Can the X5 tires be installed and safely driven on the X7, or vice-versa? What does the different rating indicate, and what are the ramifications of interchanging the tires on both vehicles?

X5 Tires: 275/35/R22 (front), 315/30/R22 (rear)
X7 Tires: 275/40/R22 (front), 315/35/R22 (rear)

go to tiresize.com and plug in the numbers to see what the difference in rolling circumferences will do to your speedometer. I can't speak to the tire load ratings without knowing the actual numbers. front and rear load ratings are likely different on each respective car, and with the X7 being heavier than the X5, I'm guessing its load ratings may be higher. conversely, it's possible the X5 tires may not safely take the weight of the X7, but again, I can't say for sure without knowing all the numbers as well as the front and rear gross axle weight ratings and the gross vehicle weight ratings.

X5 Tires: 275/35/R22 (front), 315/30/R22 (rear)
X7 Tires: 275/40/R22 (front), 315/35/R22 (rear)
The middle number is the height of the sidewall as a percentage of the width.

275mm x 0.35 = 96.25mm
275mm x 0.40 = 110mm

Now add double the difference to the rolling diameter and you add (or subtract) just over an inch in diameter. That is likely too much of a difference.

As another poster mentioned, load rating is a factor as well if putting X5 tires on a X7. No harm in going with a higher than spec load rating.

What's critical for the X-drive is that the front/rear tire diameters are the same as any one or more tires that differ, puts lots of stress on the drive system as things will always function as if you're turning rather than going straight, when things just coast along. Then, you may have clearance issues, but probably not in this case. THird, being different than the OEM item, your speedometer, odometer, and gearing will change. Load rating is also a critical function. Last, the wheel offsets and actual wheel strength may differ between models.

If the wheels in question are listed as an option on both models, then that's not an issue, but the other factors may be.

X7 tires on X5, question is, are they going to rub? We know if you don't have air suspension, it works, but don't know yet one with air sus.

X5 tires on x7. Yes it can be done since same weight rating... but it will be rougher ride because smaller side wall.

I can tell you from personal experience that you have to be precise with sidewall sizing because I almost smoked the transmission in my brand new 2015 X5 with the M trim with the "big" 20 inch rims back then. The car literally only had a couple hundred miles on it, but living in Pittsburgh I would switch out the summer tires for Continental Extreme Contacts so that I didn't have to worry about switching out to winter tires for the limited snow we get here. The guys at Pep Boys screwed up because they didn't pay attention to the fact that the staggered wheel set up called for a thinner sidewall for the rear tires. I picked the car up and it looked fine so I didn't notice at all. I drove about 5 miles, and all of a sudden the instrument cluster lit up like a Christmas tree with every warning the car had lighting up. The car was driving funny, and struggling to shift gears. Called the dealership to get it in right away. Ended up driving it about 12 miles to the dealership with the car not wanting to accelerate and struggling to shift gears. By the time I got it to the dealership I thought it was going to go up in flames because you could smell the burning transmission fluid that bad. They immediately saw the screw up by Pep Boys, but thankfully it didn't destroy the transmission. At least not during my lease period. Pep Boys had to tow the vehicle to their shop to put on the correct sidewall profiled tires on, and then BMW flushed the transmission fluid as a curtesy. Everything was fine afterwards, but rolling incorrect tires on the car for about 25 miles almost destroyed the transmission on a car that had about 500 miles on the odometer. Moral of the story is that you definitely need to pay attention to the overall size on the tire when switching rims/tires.

If it works on the x7 I don't see why it wouldn't work on the x5. Both trucks would have similar if not the same tolerances with rolling diameters and considering bmw spec'd the x7 with that size, if go for it. I'm actually about to go this route but more worried about clearances with air suspension

I’m sure you won’t have an issue. That being said I’ll have an OEM set of 22” Continental’s available in about a month with 700 miles on them. Chicago area preferred.

they'll be fine, but your speedo and odometer will be off because of the difference in rolling diameter.

the better idea is to buy the -wheels- off an x7 which have a better offset.

I can't imagine 14mm of sidewall is going to make a dramatic difference in comfort, or even be noticeable at all
