Costco refuse sale of tires...

Anyone had Costco refuse sale of tires because specs of wheel differs from the door panel. We are planning to bring in wheels and purchase tires from them to install.

Our original wheels are 21s and we are buying a new set of 20s with oem specs. They said that they can only sell a winter set for the 20s wheels. any other tires it would have to be for the 21s.

I've heard of similar stories from other tire places (Discount Tire, Tire Track...). I think they see it as a liability, but did you say they refused the sale of 20" OEM spec tires for use with 20" wheels on the basis of "different" door plaques? and to limit the sale of 20" tires to a winter set only? All that doesn't make sense.

yes, because we are brining in the 20s wheels to them. the wheels doesnt match the specs on the door panel. the door panel specs shows the 21s that was purchased with the car.

that's BS. they're OEM spec! really not a big deal and nothing they should worry about. after the 20" wheels and tires are mounted (any tires! not just winters), they input the new tire size in iDrive and it'll show the recommended psi values for them. they're scared of a little door info panel?! 🤦🏻

FYI, did you make sure the new TPMS sensors for the 20" are programmed for BMW, or they have the ability to do that after mounting (sensor/brand dependent)?

totally agree, company policy, so out of their control...

we're probably go with discount tires and wheels. we will make sure we ask the questions and the TPMS they have are BMW compatible.

Very odd! Is there another Costco nearby you can try? My local Costco just installed non-Oem size tires (I went from 245 & 265 to 255 & 275) on my M2CS without any questions or issue.

was your wheels already on the car? our plan is to bring in the new wheel (OEM size) for them to install the new tires.

No, I only brought in the wheels. They did ask me what car they were for, and one of their techs looked up the sizes to see if he thought they should work (and he felt they would, which I already knew).

Not odd, places will do this including BMW dealers. It is a liability for them. The reason they will install winters is because on the spec sheet as acceptable even though its not on the panel. Just because cars come with 20s doesn't mean they are the same. For example when you go to 21s and 22s you can get increased top speed limiter on the X5. The 20s are not the same width as the 21s or 22s. In reality you will be fine, if something was to happen and you get in a wreck and a lawsuit arise they don't want to be involved. Places are more likely to let you go bigger than spec instead of smaller.

My local Costco is extra particular. PITA. They gave me incredible hassle just for going non-RF on my last car.

Get your tires/wheels through TireRack. Put your car/model into the configurator and choose what you want from the presented options. Tires/wheels are then sent to their local affiliate for installation. No issues with the sticker/etc. because you purchased from them per their configurator's allowable options.

Eg. just purchased a set of winter wheels and PA5 tires from TR which are 275/50/19 vs. the OEM spec of 265/50/19. Net difference is 3mm wider and 1mm increased diameter but would probably cause Discount Tire/Costco to have a fit.

Literally had this problem 2 days ago. They will mount tires that don't match the car, as long as they are a factory option that fits those wheels. They wont mount a tire that is not a factory spec size. Although sometimes they might make width exceptions, that I am not sure of though.

Edit:
Maybe you can make a fake label for the door jam, and claim it was a special option from the factory. lol

I’m a bit confused. My door jam shows all the oem spec for the car. It does not say which ones the car came with so surely any on the door plaque are ok to fit.

Is there anyway you can take a straight shot of this label?
