Anyone have problems with the USB port in the center console?
I have an iPod that I leave plugged into the USB-C port in the center console to use as an alternate music source, but it won’t stay connected after the car turns off. In other words, I plug it in the first time, and it’s recognized as an iPod, selectable as an audio source, charges properly, etc., but when I shut the car off and come back later, the car doesn’t see it as being there anymore. The only way to get it be recognized is to unplug it and plug it back in. It seems like the USB port isn’t being automatically refreshed to see if anything is connected when the car is restarted. Any fix for this? It’s going to be massively disappointing if this doesn’t work. In my previous non-BMW, I always left the iPod in the center console and could always select it any time that the entertainment system was running. TIA.

I noticed the same issue with my USB C SSD. Mine stay connected most of the time, and I have to re-connect sometimes.
I manually turn off the iDrive sometimes by pressing and holding the volume knob. I wonder if that has anything to do with it. I also wonder if the iDrive goes into deep sleep if it is not driven couple of days, this might be another reason. I haven't tried the front USB A (by the cup holders? Have you? I really hope it's a softer bug.

I’ve had to reconnect even if it sits a couple of hours between drives, so I’m not sure that it’s a case of idrive going into some kind of deep sleep, unless it happens after a short period of time. Also, I don’t manually turn idrive off, just shut off the engine and open the door to get it to turn off. I swapped charging cords to see if it was a cord problem, but that didn’t fix it. Trying the USB A port between the cup holders is going to be my next step.

I switch between digital key card and one key fob to drive around, both connected to my profile. Do you only use key fob?

analogous to a computer, it appears iDrive disconnects/ejects the device at some point after drive-ready state is off, but it doesn't reconnect/recognize it upon startup. Annoying...

It looks like it remembers the iPod is there if connected to the USB A port between the cup holders, but not the USB C port inside the center console. I’m wondering now if the USB A port is always on, while the USB C port gets downpowered when the car goes to sleep. A little disappointing since I wanted to leave the iPod in the center console to reduce the clutter in the cup holder area.

I have an iPod 3G (old one I know) and it's connected to the USB-A in the cup holder area. When the car is turned off and on, it disappears and has to be unplugged and re-plugged to be recognized by the iDrive

What software (iSTEP) version you have? 07/2020 or 11/2020?

I leave a USB-A to USB-C in the center console to charge my phone faster than the wireless tray does. Recently I get a "device left in tray" when the tray is empty, I wonder if this is somehow connected to your issue? Using the plug makes iDrive think I left it in when I didn't?
