High pitched noise from center infotainment stack

Not sure how common this is, but getting a high pitched frequency noise coming from the electronics behind/near the a/c screen. It's relatively faint, but I can pick it up when there is no music on. If you put your ear near the a/c screen, you can definitely hear it. More annoying than anything when I'm trying to drive in silence.

I'm hoping that this goes away after some more break-in (1500mi so far), but wondering if others have seen this before.

Thanks.

Could be the AC/heat blower perhaps? I get a hum from the blower fan when it's at full speed. If I dropped the speed, the drone stops

I was just going to post a thread about this! It's distracting and annoying. It's clearly coming from the electronics associated with that small center HVAC display (it is not a fan noise, it's a high frequency tone/resonance from some electronic component).

My wife and I test drove 3 X5s and did I did not notice it in those. When we were picked up from the airport for PCD I noticed it in the new X5 we were picked up in (which they said was delivered 48 hours prior). Sure enough when we got our car it does the same thing.

I'm really hoping there will be a resolution for this.

I have the exact same thing. It sounds to me like something a humming from something that is not properly grounded, kind of like a guitar pickup on unshielded or ungrounded cables. I think I noticed it going away at least once when I touched the volume control but I can't confirm.

I've tried to ignore it -- having already had my car in the shop for too long for rattles, I didn't want to go the full U2 and bring it in for hums too, especially since I assume the fix means taking my entire dash apart.

If anyone does find out what is happening and what the fix is, I'd love to know!

I'm getting this too, but it's speed dependent which is bizarre. It's not my AC or music, both were off to confirm they weren't the cause. it's almost like a wind whistle but it's not coming from outside

week 3 build 2000miles. noise started last week

I get a high pitched noise as well, but I haven't noticed that it comes from the AC controls. I will have to listen for it to see what it's coming from. I always thought it was just from the sound system when there isn't any music playing.

No noise I can hear (yet). I am never a passenger but when my wife was driving on our trip, I got the chance to sit back and listen for noises and creaks. I am way too ocd about noises. It was silent at her 75mph speed. I did notice the climate control fan can be loud on high. There is a high pitch electronic noise when I reboot the iDrive system at that 35 second mark. Try rebooting your iDrive and see if the noise is similar. It’s a very distinct high frequency electronic noise as it reboots. Other causes of these types of noises are grounding issues with audio amps. If you can make the high frequency noise change with rpm, then it’s most certain a grounding issue with the audio system. The system can even be off to make this noise. Are systems are never really “off” like older cars.

Agreed. Frankly, mine is louder than I'd like (certainly louder than my previous X5s) on the lowest setting.

And again, same prob here-but ventilation and hum noise are two different pairs of shoes.

Yes. Absolutely. Different sounds and different problems.

I have this too. I isolated it to the recirculate/external ventilation. If you have it on automatic, the high pitched sound comes from the flap closing off the external air flow. If you leave it on fresh air, the flap, stays open. It’s annoying AF when auto is on and it keeps closing/opening the flap and making the squeaking noise.

The control/flap is in the passenger footwell. I pulled the cover off and when you manually set the vent to recirculatemand back to fresh air, you can clearly hear it (There is a slight delay between changing the setting and the noise).

I leave mine on fresh air.

Not sure but I think these might be two separate sounds. I hear the high-pitched sound referenced above when the HVAC is off completely. I do hear other annoying sounds, though, when the HVAC is on. Seems like there might be multiple audio gremlins.

mine happens with the HVAC off, would the flap be affected in this case?

Unsure. The way to test is - under the tempersture readout screen/display, hit the “menu” button and then set the air circulation to fresh air (can’t remember the name of the setting but selecting it that stops the flap from opening/closing automatically and the noise should stop).

Rereading above, we may be talking about a different noise/source. I’ve isolated this one in my X5 and it comes from the blower fan’s (passenger footwell) external air/recirculating vent flap. Seems like the noise you all are describing is more persistent

Mine is hard to describe, my wife rode with me and couldn't pinpoint the source either. It's not persistent all of the time, but does occur at higher speeds rather easily

not sure if you can hear it in this video I made

Respectfully, and as someone with sensitive hearing and who noises can drive absolutely crazy, if you're sure there's a fan noise, please create a thread for that so we don't get off topic. The noise the thread was started about is a high pitched noise coming from the climate control area, seemingly behind the small screen. This noise is akin to the tone an old CRT TV would make (yet more annoying). It's a high frequency tone/resonance coming from an electronic component.

Correct, it’s electronic. I haven’t noticed mine get louder with speed, but I’m not putting my ear next to the a/c screen at speed either.

When the car is on, HVAC off, music off and you put your ear next to the left or right center vent, I can hear the noise more clearly.

Going to play around with idrive options, best case it’s tied to some setting.

Bumping this. Anyone make progress? I can't drive with the music up all the time, it really bothers me.

Waiting for my first service to take it in and get it checked. Seems like maybe the newer builds have less of an issue, this is the only thread on the noise I can find.
