And that is why I NEVER drive from the back seat of my car!!!
Plus it's kind of hard to reach the pedals from the back seat!

so a car that's supposed to be safe gets hit from behind as the third card from the truck. HIT by a DAF truck not a real truck like on American roads and gets destroyed. You have 3 cars to reduce the impact prior to x5 getting slammed and the driver surviving a pure miracle. I own an x5 and would not post this to tout safety, I would hide it.

it is an X5 for sure. I do not think 3 series can survive in such crash.

An AV is not able to monitor all around, yes the camera can look all around, but the computer is to designed to take any other move. all the Tesla's fatalities occurred when a obstacle in front of the car was not detected (truck, fire truck and a concrete barrier)...

I was looking at that as well. It looks like it could have been survivable in the child seat, but no way of really knowing.
I truly hope I never have to find out.

Holy mother! That's simply amazing. Glad the driver is okay. He/she should play the lottery.

Dunno about that. Remember, that's a right-hand-drive car. The view of the left side, the seating area with the most space, is the front passenger seat. Even in the rear, a baby would easily have had enough space to survive as would the ofter passengers. I'm not saying they wouldn't be hurt of course, but given what the driver survived... have a look the the photo of the right side -poor person had a steering wheel in their chest to contend with.

The X5 can be had with a third row as well, at least in some markets.

The second photo pretty clearly shows an X5 taillight.
To add on : you can also tell by the extra top air vent in front of the passenger seat and also the memory seats on the passenger side door

Well no, it's mostly modern cars being very safe. If this was an 89 civic, all the luck in the world wouldn't help much.

Some dude on Facebook was a witness and said there were 4 passengers — a female driver and her girls. He also added some phone photos to prove it. Kinda makes sense, there's no reason for the emergency services to cut off the B-pillar on the passenger side to extract someone just from the front passenger seat since that area was relatively intact.

According to the British news, there was 3 passengers with the driver, all with minor injuries.

One of the reasons why SUV are becoming more popular is safety.

You may be making the classic error by incorrectly assuming that a highly damaged/compressed car post-incident means greater damage to occupants. Certainly nothing is clear cut in the chaos and massive variables permutations of a collision, but more damage (of certain type) to car means car took more of the impact energy away from occupants, which is the modern design paradigm with good reason. Those pics are also of car post-rescue — no attention is paid to preservation until the humans are out.
