BMW g06 humming noise
Hi Guys,
I have my BMW g06 m50i for three weeks. I have noticed a humming noise from the front drivers area. The noise gets louder at 60 MPH and 90 MPH with both 22 summer and 20 inch winter tyres. I have upload a video as example. Any suggestions? Dealer has no clue... More noticeable after 0:15 |

Interesting that it is at 60 & 90 MPH... can you hear it faintly at 30mph?
Best guess is harmonic resonance from a component in the door... something not fully tightened and/or otherwise able to vibrate. Tacoma Bridge Collapse is a great example of what can happen. |

I am like 90% sure that it is also present at lower speeds, the characteristics of sound is the same but at a very low volume. At higher speeds i think it is cancelled by wind noise. I guessed it is a bearing, like wheel bearing or bearing around the axle... Also thought about resonance as well, how on earth can the dealer find out which part of several 100 suspects? It is coming around the front left part of vehicle, but the “B” pillar brings up the noise to ear level while sitting at a normal position.

I picked up my 2021 X5 M50i last week. 22in Black rims w Conti tires.
I immediately noticed a harmonic hum (like blowing over a half full Coke bottle) between 60-70 MPH. Suspecting tire noise, I focussed on the thread here about 22in tire noise. It was very revealing. As a 2021, my car has the noted additional device on the A arm that the 2020's didn't all have. I lowered the pressure about 2lbs below stock and found it reduced the noise/vibration quite a bit. I also made an appt for today at my dealer who is very good with taking care of me. I took a tech out in my car and he agreed that there is a noise in the 65-70 range in a very short test drive. Then, my dealer let me take his demo X5 (same motor and tires but different 22in wheels). Same EXACT noise as my car. Then he let me take a BRAND NEW (11 miles) X5 M50i with 22in Pirellis and it had the noise at lower speeds before I even got to the highway. I turned around before even trying it on the highway. (These tires had higher than spec PSI) Additional info - my wife has a 2020 X5 4.0 w 19" Bridgestones. Also w acoustic glass. Totally silent and buzz-free at all speeds. I am still leaning toward some sort of harmonic vibration probably caused by the 22in tires. But the fact that it happens with 2 diff tires is not encouraging. I suggest to try lowering PSI even more. I suppose the next step is to try 19 or 20 in tires to see if that solves the problem. The other issue is that I suspect that 90% of drivers (like the owner of my dealership) don't even notice this! |

so happy for your post! I did EXACTLY the same as you. I have driven a few other cars at my dealer even new ones. 2x X5 and 2X X6 ALL of them had the noise with 22" and also with 20" winter tyres. One of them had aqoustic glass and the noise was there but almost non-hearable. Can You please watch the video i have added? If you try around 60 +- 1 MPH and 90+-1 mph do You hear a sound similar to mine in the video? This would be very useful information for me! I agre that it doesnt bother everyone , but my previous x6 F16 didnt have this. It is disappointing that the new generation is worse in road noise than the older one... |

I'll keep an eye on this when my X6 comes next month. I'm getting 20" wheels with all season tires.
This humming noise would drive me crazy. I've had this before and it was always tire related, fix was always replacing the tires. |

I have a similar noise in my X5 45e. Was gone during the summer, switched to winter tires last week and it's back. So in my case it's tire noise.

Yes, that is the sound. It moves around a bit. I find it mostly gone at 85+MPH. But that is not always practical. Debating on trying the wheels and tires from my wife's 2020 w 19". Not sure the wheels will clear my brakes on the M50i. |

Yes - I replaced the 22’s w 20in snow tires. The 22’s are in storage.
I will probably buy 20” black wheels and all season tires in the spring. There is no harmonic noises w the 20”. GW |

Did anyone solve it, other than fitting 19” such as the dealer suggested me. |

This is an odd mystery IMO.
I have a 2020 G06 on air suspension. My car came with the vibration dampers installed and 21" on runflats. It didn't make the humming noise. I have had the following tyres on car over the years: RFT 21" P Zero non RFT 21" P Zero with NCS (noise cancelling system) non RFT 21" Michelin PS4 SUV non RFT 22" Continentals All OEM tyre sizes in each case. Out of curiosity into what difference they make, I have removed the vibration dampers and tested my car on a few of the tyres, and refitted the dampers. Its a 5 minute job as I just drive onto my ramps to do it. Here's what I've found on my car: RFT 21" P Zero - NO NOTICEABLE HUM WITH DAMPERS. NOT TESTED WITHOUT non RFT 21" P Zero with NCS (noise cancelling system) - NO NOTICEABLE HUM WITH DAMPERS. NO NOTICEABLE HUM WITHOUT DAMPERS non RFT 21" Michelin PS4 SUV - NO NOTICEABLE HUM WITH DAMPERS. VERY NOTICEABLE HUM WITHOUT DAMPERS non RFT 22" Continental EcoContact6 - NO NOTICEABLE HUM WITH DAMPERS. VERY NOTICEABLE HUM WITHOUT DAMPERS Tyre barnd seems to play a part here as much as size. As much as I am not a fan of the P Zero, the NCS does seem to work. Although I note one member tried those with dampers and still had the hum, so that does confuse me. |
