Run flat blow outs
Hello!!
I have had a really crazy time, almost something for the X Files. Yesterday, 28 July, I thought I heard some strange sound while driving, but it seemed to settle down and then restarted a short while later, coming only when I went past 30kmph. Being caught up with other things, I forgot about it. A few hours later, the TPM sends out a warning. I pull into the closest gas station thinking a top up is needed or maybe a slow puncture with a nail or something. I look at the front left tyre and see that the wall has blown. Pic attached. Curse my luck, put on the spare tyre and head home. All tyre pressures checked and all OK. TPM reset and stays fine. This morning, on my way back from the hospital, I think I should check the spare's pressure just to be on the safe side, and at the gas station, fine that the rear left wall has a tear in it. Pic attached. Had to leave the car at the hospital, and have asked BMW to order new tyres for me and thats going to be a 4-5 day wait. My question us, has anyone ever had this happen? And, what the hell might have happened? Any guesses?? Thanks Niraj |

this just happened to wife's G30 19" RFT from a pothole impact going 45mph. looks very similar to your first photo. as the damages occurred to both tires on the left side, seems likely caused by the same offending thing, but the front tire took the brunt of the force.

FWIW, my winter Nokian tires have an aramid ply, the stuff used in bulletproof vests, and come with a warranty for that kind of damage. Hope to never need it!
India may never need winter tires depending on exactly where you drive. In some markets, the tire pressure warning is based on tire rotation, it does not use TPMS. It looks like the first picture does not have TPMS in it but uses the variations in tire rotation rates to determine if a tire is low...not as effective with RFT. Most all of the TPMS devices I've seen use a metal stem, not a rubber coated one. |
