Dinan Exhaust for my M50i

The time has come, my order for the Dinan F95 axleback arrives Wednesday to the shop. I’ve watched countless videos of Dahler and Eisenmann the last couple of years on M cars but the price point is just insane. I even emailed Eisenmann and connected with someone in Germany who said they no longer make it for the G05. Turnermotosport offers one for the G06 on their website for Eisenmann but they are made to order and run $3800 pre tax. I circled back with IND and they told me they are the sole distributor for Eisenmann USA. The price was well below what it costs. Roughly more than $5k. IND would be surprised if Turner sold me/honored their pricing as Turner would have to go through IND to process the order. For those curious the G06 and G05 share the same muffler part # so fitment should not be a problem. But ordering an exhaust with no ETA on build and possible price issue, I couldn’t pull the trigger.

The M sport muffler on these M50i’s are large and hideous under the rear bumper. With my exterior mods, just doest’t look right. I’m likely going to keep the stock exhaust tips (AliExpress special; split look similar to AMG). I think it looks cleaner but we will see how it fits and aligns before making any final decisions. I went with axleback to keep sound modest rather than the full system with X pipe. I aiming for a deeper and refined tone vs aggressive.

It’s a shame there aren’t many options for the M50i. It’s such a blast to drive and I’ve nearly done it all with this vehicle. This one’s a keeper.

Stay tuned as I will update Thursday afternoon with pics and clip. The only sound clip I’ve been able to find of this exhaust was the Dinan video with a few revs. Hopefully this info will help the next M50i owner looking to improve sound and still retain performance.

exhaust arrives today

I've been spending lots of time looking at pictures of the exit pipes (without Dinan slip-on tips) in hopes they will still fit within the OEM exhaust trim so I won't need to use the tips.

Should be installed by 3pm PST. Will have to pick up my kids so new posts won’t be till later afternoon.

I don't mind picking up the kids...it is one of the few times I get to enjoy my M50i alone. Car has been dropped off for surgery. Fingers crossed.

Update about an hour after drop off: Sad news. Exhaust pipes for the Dinan are too large for the exit areas of the rear bumper even with the trim removed (according to the installer). They held it up and he says its too tight. The OEM exit pipes are about 6 inches or so but the Dinan are 8ish and there isn't room. I will go see what's up at the shop in about an hour as they've put my OEM setup back on.

Just left the shop. The width of the pipes are just too wide and will touch the plastic sidewalls and heat shield. No room on either side of the pipes to squeeze in. It can be done if they shorten the exit pipes and weld on smaller tips the last few inches. However, this would involve tig welding and a special order for the same material used by Dinan (high quality). But even if he had the material he doesn't have the equipment to tig weld. Called a couple of other local seattle shops and they all told me the same thing..."no muffler shops have that nor do it."

You also cannot just cut the couple inches of exit pipe off because then the exhaust would be exiting under the vehicle and not close enough to the exit. Not a wise choice nor would did they endorse doing that for safety reasons.

Sorry gang, was hopeful for a better result and video clip to share. The only clip I have is of my tears...

I am going to remove the exhaust trim tomorrow morning and see if that makes more room. I'm certain it will, but will it be enough? Per a youtuber comment on the Dinan video, someone somewhere made it work for an M50i with the exhaust trim removed. I've come too far to quit.
