22" Tire Options

Hello Everyone,

I'm looking to get some advice on tire options! I've come to the point where I need to buy new tires but don't know which ones to go with! I'm able to source Michelin Pilot Super Sports in the front and Michelin Pilot Sport 4S for the rears. It's my understanding that the 4S is just the new version of the super sport and thread wear and pattern are the same. What are peoples thoughts on running this?

Thanks

I was going to do the same. However, there is a YouTube channel tyre reviews that tested both of these. The PS4’s is light years ahead of the super sport with considerably more grip. Almost that you would end up with a grip imbalance between front and rear.
I’m still not sure.

Thanks for the reply! Yeah I saw that video you are talking about which is holding me back a bit. I've been doing some research and we may be able to run 265/35ZR22 in the fronts. The front wheels are 9.5 and don't think there will be a lot of stretch on the tire. I'm going to compare threads from stock tires to these and see if there will be any issues. If anyone has experience please feel free to comment!

That should work. Someone last year looked at 285s for the front but im not sure if thats too much of a stretch on a 9.5 wheel.

I run PS4S on my Golf R. Different tread pattern, longer life, and better in the wet compared to the SuperSport. Would not mix and match.

When I get 22” rims for summer (and dedicate 20” OEM rims for winter use), I also plan to opt for Michelin PS4S staggered 265/35-22 and 315/30-22. Circumference is only 0.5% different, so won’t confound xDrive. I’ve had PS4Ss on two other BMWs and loved them. I optioned a space-saver spare, so okay with running non-runflats.

Yeah I agree mixing tires isn't the best. But what do people think about running 265/35/22? They make this size in MP4S and wouldn't be much of a stretch. Doubt it would really change anything and these are some of the best performing tires. Have them on my e91 and E36 and they are very comfortable and preform great.

Do you know anyone who has run this? Do you think there will be any issues with the dealer since these X5's are still under warranty?

The 315/30-22 is the OEM rear tire for optional 22” rims, and the 265/35-22 is just 10mm narrower than what are fitted to the corresponding 9.5” front rims. But consult and trust your tire retailer or Michelin advisor before committing.

Everyone has his/her preferences, and my bias (when it comes to tires) is Michelin. I’ve previously had Pilot Sport 4Ss on my X3 and M235 and loved ‘em.

I spoke to Costco and they said there won't be any issues running since the difference is so minimal. They are even willing to install so this may be the route I'm going. Will keep people posted if I do

Read this thread and make sure Costco will REALLY install your tires before purchasing:

hello all, will 285 35 22 + 315 30 22 work on G05? difference is 1,4% (comparing to 295 30 22 + 335 25 22 is 1,3%)

Best to keep circumference difference between front and rear to less than 1%, so 275/35-22 or 265/35-22 is better match (0.5% delta, either way) for 315/30-22.

I am into the same boat. I can't seem to find 22" 275/35/22 front and 315/30/22 rear tyres at all (any brand). I am considering buying 265/35/22 and 315/30/22 considering the following calculations:

What do you guys think? Would this difference be ok?

Also the ones I found are Michelin Pilot Sport 4S BMW marked for rear and Michelin Pilot Sport 4S for front (not marked BMW).

Also would there be any noticeable differences in grip or a problem with the load index (102 vs 104 = 100kg less on the front wheels) considering spirited driving?

Please do not mix and match. You are looking at potentially different tread patterns along with changing the relative grip and rotational speeds. Apart from subjective looks there is zero benefit to 22's and would consider downsizing to 20's.

There was a thread somewhere that a member contacted Michelin about mixing PSS with PS4S and they said it was completely fine to do. The tread pattern and specs between the two tires are very similar. What would bug me is the sidewall writing IS different. Enough to irritate me.

Also the thing with allowable F and R rolling diameter difference is one of those things where your center differential is fine....until its not. Its a gamble i'm not willing to take.

And Michelin will take no liability when something goes wrong or an accident happens with mismatched tires. No thanks, I'll take the matched set.

^^ not disagreeing with you there but we're not taking about putting summer tires up front and winter tires in the rear type scenario here. Either way I went with a match set up Pzeros myself even though I prefer Michelins any day of the week.

We’re not even talking summer v winter.
You can have a matching set of PS4S

If you have 265/35/22
315/30/22

1cm difference in width at the front from oem.
Same tread pattern/ same tyre front and rear.

Yeah I think the topic switched from that haha. I'm still thinking about running the Michelin Pilot Sport 4s
