I just pretended to build a 40i and 45e. Neither have HK or B&W options! wow, I would be disappointed if I were ordering now...

This so weird on so many levels. If there's a shortage wouldn't it affect all production models? Even a 3 series can still be optioned with HK audio. Maybe a specific plant? X5 and X3 are both built at the SC plant in the US. X3 configurator still shows HK as an option. 🤷🏻*♂️

My guess is that you will be fine as long as your order was scheduled for production. If it turns out that is not correct you can always just not take it.

Its not the exact same components in every car with HK. The supply issue may affect a component that is specific to the X5/6.

This is what my SA told me. I placed my order on Saturday and it has a Production Number with the HK system.

I don’t know if I would say fishy. BMW, like every manufacturer tries to order parts that are needed just in time for anticipated production needs, HK (and other parts suppliers) try to manufacture parts based on the anticipated demand from the manufacturers.

This cuts cost/maximizes profits but creates constraints when things like COVID happen since predictions go out the window and now a just in time philosophy can wreak havoc on production estimates.

Look at how many X5s sold last year - way more than expected. By the trade publications and by BMW.

They may have sold fewer other models than expected or have higher inventory of parts on those models, etc.

One just never knows and predictions are just that. With a pandemic, it’s hard to predict almost anything with certainty.

I’m curious to see how the used car, late model, heavily optioned market spikes even more now since buyers may be willing to look at used to get the options they want.

Interesting time, I think this is the beginning though - not the end.

Stay tuned for more of these types of shortages for a while. I was a little upset that I couldn’t get acoustic glass and the cooled/heated cup holders when I ordered my X5 a little while ago but this was more of an ‘impulse’ buy since my previous car was fantastic, I just wanted a change after 1.5 years. If I couldn’t have gotten at least the HK (ended up upgrading to the B&W) and the HUD there is no way I would made the change. Too many things to give up.

I’m thinking I may not be alone, we’ll probably see sales on the margin where someone doesn’t ‘need’ to get a new car (I.e. coming out of a lease) drop due to some of these bigger deletions. At least until this craziness is over.

BMW is killing the X5 for the 2021 year. They might as well tell you to order a GLE or Cayenne if you positively need to order a luxury mid size SUV this year.
If you wanted a mid tier mid size SUV, you might as well get a Explorer, Grand Cherokee, etc... as those will have a decent audio system and a fair amount of luxury features for a lot less money.

Agreed. I think Acura, Lexus and Lincoln will take quite a few 40i customers due to all the cut backs. At this point, the 40i is barely more luxurious than my G01 M40i, and doesn't drive anywhere near as "fun".

So glad I have all that in my 2020! I am in the market for a second SAV and was immediately going for another loaded X5, but will wait to see if everything is back for 2022. Looking at an X3m40i, but it has even less tech and may wait to see what the 2022 LCI brings. Fortunately I am in no hurry as my 328 will be kept and used as a back up buying either vehicle.
I used to have them on my F10 as part of the executive package. I can't believe I took them for granted.

It was just a feature to be had but now that I don't have them, I realize how much I used them as an integrated part of ingress/egress.

I guess it just gives me an excuse to get a new X5 as soon as the soft close comes back

I wouldn’t be surprised if the other manufacturers aren’t having supply issues and either cutting back production or dropping options too.

Is it possible BMW is arranging an entirely new set of hifi options for the X5 in MY2022? The disappearance of the B&W from all but the 8cyl and now the disappearance of the HK system might well mean supply issues (probably the least surprising explanation) but could also mean something different entirely.

In any event, I have been lurking on this board, reading about the 45e for some time, and was disappointed when the B&W option was dropped. I was waiting for the end of the pandemic to buy anyway (not driving much at all these days), but was hoping to see a hifi solution by the time I got around to ordering. There is NO WAY I am ordering one of these cars with the base stereo. None.

Nope. The B&W was specifically designed for G05 by B&W in 2019 so its a entirely new system for the vehicle.

Google "microchip shortage automotive". Some articles there about how the global microchip shortage is affecting the auto industry as a whole. It sounds like it will get worse before it gets better.

False alarm? I was looking at my order and it looks like HK has been moved into the standard features (rather than exec or separate option):

I also noticed the Alcantara Headliner has been moved from "Added Options" to "M Sport Package"

It's not a false alarm. I don't know when your order was placed, but if you attempt to place one today it will list "676 Hi-Fi sound system" even if optioned with Premium or Executive packages in the US.

I suspect your order is okay. I think this only impacts new orders, but I'd check with your dealer to be sure.

Obviously the simplest explanation is likely the right one. But if BMW got fed up with the supply issues and could not get a commitment of adequate supply going forward, I could see them looking to change direction before the normal cycle. Just a thought

Just sayin . . . Many other manufacturers got hit earlier.
