Manufacturers mostly advertise the fuel economy based on the best usage of the hybrid system. If you drive on highways at constant speed 95+% of the time, there you get no benefit from the hybrid system. On average you probably will likely get lesser fuel efficiency than advertised unless you only drive for regular commute in busy roads.

I don't think any of us ever expected to get the claimed 182mpg so I would be shocked if any of us have based our fuel budgets on those claimed figures. Realistically if you do less than 40 miles per day then you can cover most if not all in electric if you drive moderately.

I have covered 1600 miles since delivery 1300 electric only and computer reads 90mpg based on 300 petrol miles out of the 1600. Which is great in terms of pollution and petrol costs. What that doesn't take into account is the cost of electricity and how much you use. My electric company claims that 100% of my electric is from wind power not to mention my solar panels. So environmentally my electric charging is very green.

When you factor in electric and petrol costs combined it has cost me about £170 to cover the 1600 miles.

I would need to have a petrol car that does 50mpg to get the same economy. But that car would not have nearly 400hp and 0-60 in 5 seconds! And the luxury of the 45e that I have specified.

So I am very happy!

I've never seen BMW claim 157 mpg, and no one in their right mind would believe them if they did.

It’s possible to drive the X5 45e and never have the ICE turn on, so your mpg would be infinity. In my case, the computer says about 62.7mpg since built. If the engine has more than a couple of hours on it, I’d be surprised. Most of my driving is around town, where EV mode is more than enough and I plug it in when I get home again. Your case could easily differ.

This was how the hybrid car was tested:
"We start each test cycle with a full battery charge and continue to repeat them until the state of charge drops below 50%, taking a measurement of the electric energy supplied for charging. We then conduct the same cycles with an empty battery once. Our calculation then takes all of these factors into account."

So first, they don't test with pure electric mode - so this is unfair to PHEV like X5 with a decent electric range mode (as some customers can avoid using gas all together) as compared with some which has very limited range (where use of gas is unavoidable). And they also tested with battery emtpy - well, what do you expect?

It looks like the testing was just bad and wants the manufacturers to look bad.

I took delivery in December 2020 with a full fuel tank. in my use case, my daily round trip commute is 20 miles, so I use electric daily and charge nightly (level 2). my fuel tank is still 75% full.

my electricity company charges ~$0.097/kWh to charge, so my bill hasn't increased significantly at all.

another way "green" advocates argue that hybrid users aren't really helping decrease fossil fuel use at all is by stating the electric companies increase their use of fossil fuels to deliver the electricity needed to charge the hybrid. IOW, the use of fossil fuels shifts from the consumer gas pump to the electric company. of course, that depends on the electric company where some have the wind or solar infrastructure to generate electricity while others (like mine) do not. BUT for me, the fuel costs to deliver electricity to charge my vehicle actually decreased!

Is the Daily Mail even a legit news organization? Sorry, I'm unfamiliar with UK news orgs and it sounds like something I've heard being sued for defamation by some celebrity or one of those fake newspapers like the National Enquirer in the US.

Your recollection is on point. This is how wikipedia put it:

Quote:
The Daily Mail has been noted for its unreliability and widely criticised for its printing of sensationalist and inaccurate scare stories of science and medical research, and for instances of plagiarism and copyright infringement.

I drive majority highway to and from work and I am getting 44.8mpg which is amazing to me. If I had less highway I’d do even better, but oh well.

This alert is unfair to hybrid vehicles. The only truth that it exploits is the fact they have the potential to make completely different figures depending on how you use it. Obviously if you dont charge it and drive in sport all the time it will have completely different numbers.

My week is: day 1: 60km; day2: city driving; day3: 100km; day 4 and 5; city driving:
Weekend: before lockdown 60 to 100 km; after lockdown: 0 km.
Two big trips (300-400km each).

Numbers are:
from factory: 6.2 l/100 (37.9 mpg). 11.000km
Last reset (more careful driving, same week routine): 4.8l/100 (49 mpg) 4.000km

I have seen anything between 70mpg and 17,4mpg.
It all depends on how you drive. Local small roads in EV mode or doing a 300km autobahn trip with an empty battery.
